Need ideas on repairing or replacing vinyl siding on 20 year old doublewide. Several pieces of the gray siding have holes from rocks thrown by lawn mower I suppose. Doesn't matter what caused it. It looks bad and lets rain into dwelling.

Probably no way to match the color, does it really matter in this class of rental if it isn't WAY off? Or to do it right should I go ahead & have whole end of house done? --71.51.xxx.xxx

I imagine 20 year old vinyl siding is pretty brittle. You could remove a few pieces from another the smallest side to use for patching. Then put new similar siding on this whole area. --72.93.xxx.xxx

I would love to use caulking or duck tape, but these holes are jagged and 1" - 2" in size. --71.51.xxx.xxx

they make metal tape. cut it into circles and add a few dummpy ones!? like potta-dots!

Trim them square or a nice flat shape, get rid of the jagged edges. Get a piece of metal and cut square or rectangles and cover. Use metal cutters, like for siding. Use the right screws or they will rust. Caulk the edges.

Maybe there is a roof patch material ... or how about spray foam? then you could cut it flat after expansion and paint it grey to match. That's what I would do

I have found quite a few nice mobile home products at Mernards. --173.127.xxx.xx

Depending upon the extent of the damage this may work....

Find siding that is the same profile and as close of a match in grain and color as you can get. Cut the nailing strip off the top and the lock off of the bottom of the new siding, leaving enough at the top so that when placed on top of the existing siding it will slide under the row of siding above it and wrap under, but not behind, the bottom of the row of siding you place it on. Glue in place. If the color doesn’t quite match and you want it to be closer, you can paint it.

I’ve done this a couple of times and it has worked well. YMMV. --70.178.x.xx

I successfully used Butyl tape (from Amazon) to cover larger holes like this in vinyl siding (on a lower-class rental). It comes in white & black, though - so not sure what you do for gray. --68.105.xxx.xxx

Pat of VA, How much do you want to put into the mobile home? At this point buy a piece of siding or soffit. Most likely it will be soffit. If the siding is wood grain use the wood grain side of the soffit. OR if its smooth use the other side of the soffit. Cut the siding in a strip 5" longer than the hole and the width of the hole. Drill a small hole in the middle of the vinyl strip. Use a thin wire to help hold the piece of vinyl once you slip it into the hole. Get some exterior construction adhesive for vinyl siding and glue it to the back side of the siding. Use some painters tape to help hold the wire in place until it dries. Then snipe the wire and the piece will fall behind the siding. You may have to use some paintable caulking to seal the little hole and the area around the hole to keep water out.

Once you are done with the patches, pressure wash the siding. be careful so you don't damage the siding with the pressure. Use a good vinyl primer and a Satin or Eggshell for the finish coat of paint.

You have to remember to remove the white chalking on the old siding. Plus clean the years of dirt off the siding.

Check at Lowes or Home Depot has a good cleaner for vinyl siding. If you don't feel comfortable using a pressure washer then get a long handle brush to clean the vinyl siding and rinse with a sprayer attached to the garden hose. --99.56.xx.xx

Remove siding from one end. Use those faded pieces to replace the tattered pieces on front, back, and opposite side. Putting all the new pieces of siding keeps it looking nice. --72.172.xxx.xx

I assume the rest of the siding still looks good.

Goggle " azek universal skirt board "

Recently have been seeing this on some higher end housing.

They start with this at the bottom then change to vinyl siding.

What you would do. Is use this all around the house. This would allow you to rob some pieces to use for exact match for patching.

You would be replacing the first selection of vinyl all around the house.

And in future if you ever do replace the siding. This skirt board could look like an upgrade and still be used with new siding. So not duplicating work much.

You could also make your own with different pvc moldings and if have to , just buy 4 x 8 sheets of 1/2" PVC and cut the side to match first course of siding.

Anyway just another idea. --73.177.xxx.xx

Not enough creativity being offered in this forum. Take an exterior electric box and screw it on over the hole - no electric just the box

Put fake hose spigot over another

Put a hose holder over another

Find things that look like they belong and caulk the hole and cover it

That could be a lot of electric boxes. Especially if they are at eye level.

Some of the same profile siding. Cut out patches and color match with a paint. Would be next best thing.

Cut off the nail flange. And just slip over the hole with some adhesive caulk would make it just as easy. --73.177.xxx.xx

If there are only a few holes:

remove the vinyl from the gable ends, only in the gables. Use that to patch your holes.

Now replace the gable ends with white vinyl. Looks like an upgrade, not a repair.

If you have LOTS of holes, pull the entire back and use those pieces. And replace the entire back.

MH siding is the cheapest made. I look for small lots of vinyl on Craigslist: 1, 2, 4, 6 squares. They sometimes go really cheap for quality stuff. It's enough to do one side, or just the gables.

One other method we have successfully used: remove the vinyl from the center section of the front. Use it for repairs. Replace the center section with a contrasting color (small lot from CL). Now it's an upgrade. --98.122.x.xx

We had the same problem on 2 houses. The first we took all the siding off the worst wall and used the good peices to repair the rest of the house. Then we went and bought the closest color to it so we wouldn’t have to change corners and trim. The second one we ended up having to replace all of the back and front to get it to look right (it was very faded) but we used the old to repair the end walls and again the closest color so we didn’t have to change j-channel or outside corners. --67.236.xxx.xxx
