I had my first rooming house eviction today.

If you recall, I have a slob rooming who has been in violation of my no visitors rule and been guilty of general sloppiness particularly in a shared bathroom. After thinking about it, I decided to terminate his rental agreement. He begged for a reprieve on the basis he badly needed his room and I relented. He claimed that he was not the individual messing up the bathroom. Over the past few of days, I've had to clear clogs in the toilet twice and now that the slob has been "pinched", he's become a snitch and is alerting me to problems as a way to avoid the blame falling on him. Today he calls me and tells me he can't use the bathroom because another tenant is sleeping on the floor snoring. So I run down there to see what's going on and sure enough, the last tenant I rented my 6x9 small room to is sleeping on the bathroom floor by the toilet. His room door is open, so I go in to do a quick inspection--I see no drugs but see an empty wine glass tipped over on the bed.

I rouse him and ask him what's up. He tells me he came in from work and had a drink. I smell no alcohol and saw no liquor bottles in his room. I'm thinking he'd on some sort of drug, but don't know enough to know what kind it might be and I'm not going to take time to sort it either. All I know is that whatever he did, passing out on my bathroom floor is a no go. My first concern is him leaving something on in the kitchen at some point and causing a fire. I told me he's has to go. He too wanted a reprieve, but this one is a hard no. He's got until tomorrow to get out. I suspect it's been this guy who's been messing up the bathroom as well.

Financially, his week's been paid and I'm holding another advance week and his SD. I'll refund the advance week. He's not eligible for a return of his SD.

Now THAT sounds more like what most of us were expecting when we heard you were getting into rooming houses. ;-)

I think you made the right move to get rid of him. Gotta break a few eggs to cook an omelet. Other residents should hopefully take note that a) rules must be followed and b) you care enough to get rid of folks who don't follow rules. --173.19.xx.xxx

I guess in years past, the owner lived in the house & was able to "nip it" immediately. I hope it works out for you but I tend to get too involved in my regular tenants lives. This would drive me crazy. Too much constant drama.

If you get a good group in place, it will make things a lot easier but that's a big if! --71.51.xxx.xxx

GKarl: it certainly seems like you have had a great run.

This may just be the law of avgs. settling up for the year.

Your reports here have been great & interesting and it certainly sounds like you have good grip on things.

This too shall pass...its just the CODB.

Continued good luck --74.105.xxx.xx

GKARL,

Great story!

Maybe you need to take a DNA sample of the material in that clogged toilet to ID the offender! Is there no plunger in that bathroom? (I prefer the accordion style - works great!) Maybe even leave a toilet snake there?

Give the guy a gold star for puking in the toilet and not the bedroom before he passed out!

Where were the other residents who use that bathroom? Did they step over him to do their business?:)

Keep the stories coming! Love reading them!

BRAD

I wound up getting a much better plunger and a snake. The plunger did the job, so I'm going to take the snake back.

The slob resident was the only one who complained. No one else said anything. There's another bathroom to use and I'm guessing they availed themselves of it. There are guys sharing this floor. --64.121.xxx.xxx
