I have a Rental house in Michigan. This rental house has a high sewer treatment cost applied to the water bill by the city. The tenant is responsible to pay for their water consumption and their garbage pick up but who is responsible for this extra charge on the water bill? Who pays the sewer treatment cost? sewer fees are always part of the "water" bill . So if it's on the water bill, then it's paid by the tenant if they agreed to pay water bill.

Now, if it's a fee levied as part of property tax (and not rolled over from unpaid water bill), thats on you --12.156.xxx.xx

If the sewer bill varies with the amount of water used, then it is under the control of the tenant and they should pay. If it is a flat amount, then you could just build it into the rent and that eliminates the potential conflict about who pays. --67.186.xxx.xxx

I have the tenant pay the water and sewage.

In Indiana the delinquent sewage charges can be attached to the property. I withhold enough to cover these from the damage deposit.

Michigan maybe different. --68.60.xxx.xx

Year ago the Los Angeles City was going to raise the cost of water by 50%. Landlord pooled their money and fought it in court. We won. The city could only raise the cost of water by 10% a year. The next day the City elevated the sewer fee's by 50%. Now the sewer fee's are around 80% of the cost of water. High way robbery. --47.156.xx.xx

You can't always force the sewer bill on the tenants. There's the worst sewer utility in the country in St. Louis. Metropolitan Sewer District. They make the mafia look like saints. --173.25.xx.xx

The tenant is responsible because the sewer charge is based on how much water they use. --24.231.xxx.xx
