For those of you who don't need the computing power of a $1000 laptop and don't really like Windows anyway and don't need Microsoft applications, you might want to consider a Chromebook.

We bought one for our granddaughter for Christmas as her whole school is run on Google Classroom, no need for Windows. DH liked it so much he got himself one too.

They are geared towards Google products, which is what we use: Google Forms, Google Sheets, Gmail, Calendars, etc.

Lightning fast to start up (no Windows bloatware to load!) and responsive in use, they are nice little less than $300 machines. Pretty too. The ASUS one we ordered online at Costco is white with the little rainbow Google "G." On sale at Christmas we paid $199 for DG's but DH's was $289.

Not much storage space: everything is saved to Google Drive in the cloud.

Don't forget, with a USB-C to USB-A/B adapter you can download from the chrome book to an external drive. There by storing files locally. --47.157.xxx.xxx

AllyM, Microsoft has held us prisoner for dozens of years. Chromebooks are run on a form on Android, I think.

If only Quicken would come up with a viable alternative to Windows... --50.82.xxx.xx

That makes no sense? You've been a prisoner to Windows since computers came out.

With Google's OS continuing to grow (hopefully), more software vendors will incorporate their software to run on it. --98.175.xxx.xxx

I've been posting to this Board for 4 years now from my chromebook. I have the old $199 model and I love it--except for 1 thing. It does not have a delete button. You have to backspace every letter to delete. Does the $289 model have a real delete key?? --108.87.xx.xxx

Thanks for the tip about Chromebooks.

Apple. ebay, amazon, and yahoo also spy. Charles Mercer's Cambridge analytics and Palentir both harvest data. You might try duckduckgo instead and use the onion from the Tor project.

Best of luck.

wow. No Delete Key! A quick Google search says ALT+Backspace is Delete, but it didn't work when I tried in DH's just now.

When do you use the Delete, though? I'm trying to think. Mostly I just backspace anyway? --50.82.xxx.xx

AHA! Backspace deletes to the LEFT, Delete deletes to the RIGHT. 30 years of computing and I never thought about that!!

So just tried it and ALT+BACKSPACE *does* Delete. --50.82.xxx.xx

If you felt captive with ms-dos or windows you could have tried out a operating system call -linux- this is a lightweight unix operating system and you can find oodles of freeware that mirrors windows or ms-dos based products, sometimes you have to alter drivers to make older equipment run from the expansion port whether parallel, usb or serial methods are used. but fear not missing this - you can load a version onto a thumbdrive and experience the features, there is a educational version with math, science, composition, grammar and so much more, free.... --76.188.xxx.xx

As an IT guy, I'll just say this... I think Chromebooks are great for people that just need email and web and some simple document editing. So, a GREAT choice for your DH and any kids doing Google Classroom stuff.

That being said, I think your dislike of Windows is a bit off these days. My Windows 10 laptop boots up in about 3-4 seconds -- just as fast or faster than a Chromebook does.

They boot so fast because they have SSD storage in them. So, it isn't a "Windows Bloat" thing at all like you've suggested. A decent laptop with an SSD will boot ChromeOS or Windows 10 in just a few seconds.

Also, I'm a big Google fan -- they offer a great deal of free products that I use daily. But just remember: if you're not paying for it, then YOU ARE THE PRODUCT. Google is happily providing all of that free software because they are using the data from your usage for ads and other profitable enterprises.

I'm not being tin-foil-hat here. Again, I like and use Google all the time. But I realize WHY it is free and I'm ok with that.

It's just weird to me to act like MS is some evil entity and Google is all good. That's simply not reality these days.

As for Linux as Vee mentions... I've been using it for years as an excellent server OS for my mail, web, and other internet services. However, I'm still not overly thrilled with it as a desktop OS for the average Joe User. Again, those people that just want email and web are likely better off with a Chromebook.

John, I have an entirely personal reason to hate Microsoft, and it stems back to what could be termed the "Late Night Wars" in the earlier computing days. --50.82.xxx.xx

Exactly. That's my point. Your hatred of MS from probably over a DECADE ago is clearly influencing your opinion of them now. That's why I'm pointing out that statements about Windows being slow to load because it is bloated are outdated and incorrect. When you compare similar hardware (a laptop with an SSD), Windows will also boot up in a few seconds just like a Chromebook.

Just wanted to correct that misinformation.

Nothing wrong with a Chromebook if yu use it for its intended purpose. Email, Google classtoom, Facebook, any thing that can be done in a Web browser.

I started off on a server based system and an Atari PC attached to a TV screen, as well as a TI-99 computer, and an IBM compatible PC booting from a floppy. My first programming course we had to color in cards with a #2 pencil. Then we were introduced to the punch card keyboard. Nice compared to coloring them in.

Then on to the pc. Love my PCs. In 1989 I got my first one with a hard drive. Delightful! Now we are back to doing most on a server, but we call it "the cloud". It isn't a cloud, it is someone else's computer. But hey, what comes around goes around! Google Drive and Dropbox are wonderful for a business that I run mostly from my smartphone. --64.251.xxx.xxx

I like you, Barb -- I think we might be the same person in another universe. :) Just funny reading your post since so much of it lines up to me (even the first PC with an HDD in 1989 -- except mine was on an Apple IIgs)!

I've still got a TI-99/4A and a few Atari PCs in my basement right now too. :)
