An old Whirlpool dishwasher was covering the dishes with a black particulate. The filter was clean. I ran a half cup of CLR through with a long, hot wash. I used CLR only, no soap or anything else. The dshwasher now works fine and the dishes look great.
I found out about CLR from an experienced landlord with a lot of college rentals.
Some appliance repair forums suggest using a gallon of vinegar or citric acid. Not sure about these or where to buy citric acid in bulk.
Just an FYI to possibly help another landlord. --96.234.xxx.xxx |

A great tip shared here years ago is using vitamin c tablets to clear the rust from racks with bumps in the covering - shared by Royal... --76.188.xxx.xx |

If the dishwasher interior is white, run empty with the detergent cups filled with TANG. The inside and racks will sparkle. --67.211.xx.xx |

They now sell dishwasher cleaners in the grocery stores. But you can also buy a commercial descaler in a restaurant supply store for a lot less money. Running a descaler through the dishwashers is part of my turnover cleaning.
I once took Comet cleanser to the plastic inside of a filthy dishwasher in a rental. I figured if it didn't work, we would simply replace. Worked great and did not harm the dishwasher. The dishwasher is still going strong 3 years later. --98.146.xxx.xx |

It is possible to buy vinegar with a higher level acetic acid at 10 per cent instead of the 5 per cent. Some grocery stores carry this type of vinegar. Even though CLR is a Canadian product it is very expensive to use. --147.194.xxx.xxx |

Tang, Lemon Koolaid (just the packet without sugar), vitamin c are all pretty much the same citric acid that beaks up mineral deposits, so will vinegar, CLR etc. I now just throw in a dishwasher cleaner, some in a bottle, some in a packet or tablet, and let it cycle. Remove the filter and clean that as well. --96.236.xx.xx |

del,
Cascade Gel crystalizes and clogs the tiny spray holes. I wonder if that was related to your mystery flecks.

PS
Cascade Gel crystals will eventually make the DW unusable. The appliance guy at Lowes showed me 3 returned DWs that were crystallized beyond repair.

Thanks for the tip about Cascade Gel. I have used powder Cascade for years in dishwashers with good results. --96.234.xxx.xx |
