Young tweenage couple passes the interview, says they have no pets, don't smoke, both work, seem responsible and had the deposit.
After searching a long time and lots of bad choices, finally settled on them. They move in, and pay rent promptly for two months.
Until another renter moves out.
Now I'm over at the building getting the apartment cleaned. And what do I hear? Well, a roaring, crying infant baby coming from their apartment.
I tell myself, oh they're watching someone's kid. But then its there again the next time I'm over, a couple days later. And the next time I go over.
Who am I kidding?
They smuggled in a baby, its theirs..... and they lied on the app obviously (she showed no signs of being pregnant at the interview).
Well, what would you do?

Haha, funny. Yes, I wouldn't want to discriminate against children, right.
I wouldn't mind so much, its just that we figured: "They'll last until about 6 months in this one bedroom studio until after they have their first baby, and then they'll be wanting to bolt."
Well they ALREADY HAVE THE BABY. They won't even last until Spring, likely.
Can't think what would make them hide the fact, its a strange thing to do usually people are beaming proud of a newborn. And of course, they flat out lied. Not a good sign, either.
Acknowledge, or ignore the obvious? was what I wondered other landlords would do.

Right, gotcha. I guess to paraphrase my father, "If a renters lips are moving... they're lying." lol
Oh well, it was a first for me. I'll report in if anyone else more exciting joins the lease.

You could also look at your lease to make sure that it indicates that baby wipes cannot be flushed down the toilet, including those that are advertised as being flushable. I learned from this forum about including a clause about the wipes. In general, I guess you'll figure out if these tenants don't call you incessantly about repairs and pay rent on time.
Best of luck. --107.142.xxx.xx |

I think they will stay unless you become rude or nasty to them. Figure they can't afford to move now since one income is gone so someone can stay home with the baby. If getting them to stay is your only problem, then give them a small baby gift. I gave my young couple tenants who I knew were having a baby, half the month's rent free as a gift. But I can afford to do that after all these years. --73.33.xxx.xxx |

Yep, that's my experience too. Babies will do that. I wouldn't like it either but since they are there id be concerned about showing the vacant unit and the sound being a turn off... However my mom would say it was music to her ears... She loved babies and all the kids loved her. Music to her ears... Hear it differently. --66.87.xx.xx |

Too late now they are already in,i would ignore it,not like a baby is going to kick in the front door besides if they looked at the place and already had the kid maybe they were seeing the place as acceptable with a kid and will stay a year or two --72.231.xxx.xxx |

They'll probably stay longer than you anticipate. They have to be able to afford a larger place. They can get by in that studio for at least a couple of years. --207.172.xx.xxx |

Any baby abductions in your area in the news? They could have abducted it. I know it's unlikely but it's possible.
Here's a gruesome story from Fargo. Someone is their landlord.

The point isn't the baby but the lying about it. Is this a one bedroom or a duplex? Trying to figure out why a baby would be an issue other than the lying?
I would simply ask them about it. Ias suggested, it may not be their baby. My lease States who may reside in the home and includes the adults on the lease an any minor children they have. So if it's not their baby they're violating the lease. --75.89.xx.xxx |

Maybe just mention it too them in passing that in the future, you would appreciate it if they were a tad bit more forthright with exactly who will be living there.....but an infant isn't causing you any harm and only make them sleepless at night.

Some people co sleep so the size of what they are renting won’t even be an issue if baby doesn’t have it’s own crib. Babies don’t really need more space until they start crawling at 8 months or walking at a year old. One renter of mine has a 2 bedroom house. She’s pregnant with her 4th kid but only has custody of her 2 year old. She still co sleeps with the 2 year old and probably will co sleep with both of them when the new baby comes. --173.26.xx.xxx |
