Ok, so this one isn't too off the wall. But, it happened to me last night and I got a good laugh out of it.
Tenant called and said they have leaks in the HVAC system. This is a tenant that I won't immediately call a contractor on because it's been stupid stuff and cost me money. So, I go over to see what the heck they are talking about. When I get there, he starts telling me that the floor in the kitchen gets real hot when the furnace is on. I ask him to kick on the furnace and I'll go in the basement to inspect.
The basement is unfinished and old (not livable). So, the duct work is just strapped to the ceiling and very accessible. I start feeling around on the duct work and I did actually find a few holes in it (it's the flex stuff, not rigid metal). No problems here, just some tape will fix.
I head over to underneath the kitchen and find a register going up through the ceiling. Hmm, this looks odd. I go back up to the kitchen and the tenant stayed in the basement knocking on the ceiling where the register is. Sure enough, whoever the jack wagon is that installed the flooring in the kitchen just went right over the register. It's a vinyl floor and there is no give in the vinyl. Therefore, they not only went over the register, they also had to have put some wood in there to support it!
I told the tenant I'd be back this weekend to cut a hole in the floor and get that register going for him. The real kicker is that I got this house about 2 and a half years ago. The tenants that were present then, the next tenant that was there a year and the current tenants that have been there just over a year have not said anything until now about the floor getting hot when the furnace is on. I laughed all the way home on that one...
