Have you ever hired a stump grinder? I am referring to a real professional stump grinder who brings his grinding machine to your property on flat bed trailer. What is the going rate for stump grinding in your area?

Here my stump grinder is named Monroe, he is a stocky elderly fellow (4 ft. 11" - he is a stump himself), and his stump grinding machine weighs about 2 tons, looks like small bulldozer on rubber tracks, and has a large cutting wheel on the front to grind down any size stump with ease. I have hired Monroe on numerous occasions to grind stumps and grind 'above ground tree roots' that grow underneath the foundation of rental houses.

All Monroe does 5-6 days a week is grind stumps and he makes a small fortune doing it too. Monroe charges me $50.00 for a stump that is approx. 36 inches wide. Stumps less than 3 ft. wide, he charges $35.00/stump. Also, if the stump is more than 12 inches in height, he charges extra for that stump.

The only issue I have with Monroe is that he does not clean up the mess he makes,...and he makes a HUGE mess every time he grinds a stump. I have to hire someone else to clean up his debris field but at the discount he gives me, I can't complain too much.

What does your stump grinder charge you? Just watching a stump grinder grind a big stump down to nothing is someone to see! --68.63.xxx.xxx

Your prices sound similar to the going rate around me. Lately I've had tree trimming company grind stumps as part of tree removal or other work so o don't know what portion of the costs is the stump grinding.

I know the company that does only stump grinding can be negotiated with especially when they have several to do on the same property. It never includes cleaning up the pile of debris. --173.170.xxx.xxx

Depending on the difficulty of accessing the stump it can go over $100, but $50 is average if they're already on site doing a job. Had one that was right next to a foundation so they had a terrible time getting the machine in there right. Took every bit of 2 hours. It's a special kind of person who plants a tree 3 feet from the side of a house. --173.19.xx.xxx

That's a really good deal for the stump grinding. Mine are $100-$150 and they also don't clean up.

Main reason is disposal on their end. Where do they put it?

Wood chips add up quickly, especially doing it 5 days a week.

Most of the time when I have stump grinding going on, I also have excavation work too, so it makes it easy to clean up.

Other times is shovel and buckets.

Good filler for your doggy holes. --74.37.x.xxx

Sid,

A year ago, I had a large tree cut down that was leaning toward a neighbors house. That 3 ft. wide stump will be grinded down next week and I will use some of the excess dirt/wood chips to fill in the crater holes in the backyard of this rental house. I only hire Monroe when a rental house is vacant. --68.63.xxx.xxx

That is very cheap for my area and it is extra to clean up the debris and extra if you want them to bring in topsoil and fill the hole and plant grass on it.About 3-4 years ago my wife worked at a large equipment rental store and on a long weekend we rented a large pull behind stump grinder and did several huge stumps at our house,a few at a rental and a couple more big ones at my parents house, that thing was a blast and I put 22 hours of use on it in a 3 day weekend. --72.231.xxx.xxx

Your getting a steal at 50.00 and being from AL you gotta know that!!!!!

whats the other 2 choices: leave them or call a front end loader guy to push them over. Problem with that is you still have stump and now you have stump hole.

Being from AL I owuld think you'd take the grinding bag it and sell it as mulch? Roy I'm disaapointed!!!!! Where you born in AL? --99.103.xxx.xxx

Sell the mulch, there is a program in my big city they have to remove the large trees from the curb cause they are falling onto cars and lifting sidewalks - talk about a mess, anyway I get a trailer full of trash cans and bring it to my places for mulching whatever needs it, takes half a day to shovel in - transport around and tip over plus some smoothing out. --76.188.xxx.xx

Maybe reconsider using it to fill in hole.

When it decomposes the holes will now need more fill dirt. And the gas it puts off while doing so can stop grass from growing --73.177.xxx.xx

I haven’t hired a stump grinder guy in about 5 years, but prior to that I was paying $100 per stump, ( big machine like you speak of ) the only clean up was he wouid rake all the debris to where the stump used to be. The final straw was when I had thee decent stumps at different houses in the same hood. Took him just a couple hours for all 3. Still $300. At that point I went and bought my own stump grinder, and actually get to use it a few times a year. It’s a DR brand grinder, kinda like what you wouid rent at Home Depot. Plus, why was I letting someone else have the fun that’s involved in grinding a stump. --75.141.xxx.xxx

If you expect them to clean it up, expect a much higher bill. The stump grinder is towed in on the back of a truck.

Most pros will bring in a skid steer and dump truck if you want it cleaned up.

Milton's pride and joy is most likely his stump grinder. He may not have the means to clean it up and remove it.

He probably doesn't own a skid steer and may be too old to shovel all that stuff.

I think to say that he isn't worth hiring again probably isn't a fair expectation of what he does.

A dozen states away and they don't clean it up here unless it's an additional charge tells me it's a normal thing. --50.32.xxx.xx

That price is a lot cheaper than I've seen. Those guys just wanna grind and leave. I understand the problem. Have you ever tried burning one woth charcoal like was discussed on the boards recently? Cut it low and a bag a charcoal would probably get it done w a lot less cleanup. --70.195.xx.xxx

easily 100+ around here. it might include debris removal if you are having work done already and the truck is there.

I echo the suggestion of NOT using the grindings as the debris hrts the soil....you really do not want it there.

Also....WATCH OUT that the grinder gets ALL the roots as if you are not watching they will cheat and get our as fast as they can. --173.63.xx.xx

Whenever I price tree work, it's about $300-$400 to take down the tree, and another $200-$300 to grind the stump. They're generally about 2' in diameter. I generally have them cut it down so that the stump is still tall enough that it's not a hazard for mowing, but I'll wait until I can find a more competitive price, and save my $200-$300 for clean/safe/functional, rather than trying to be a perfectionist in the yard. (We don't do manicured lawns in my little rural town, so no one has expectations otherwise.) --96.46.xxx.xx

We had a cottonwood at our place that was mostly-dead and just barely hanging on to life, so we took it down ourselves at Easter of 2013, and left about 5' of it standing. Earlier this summer (four years later), it was severely leaning, and DH knocked it over with just a push. :) Sometime in the next four years, we'll pick up a chainsaw that's big enough to split it up for firewood... it'll be well-seasoned for sure! :P --96.46.xxx.xx

Deanna: best time to cut with chain saw is when wood still wet. after several years and wood is dry it will be way more difficult. I cut into 3 lengths when I bring down a tree then dry those then easy to split with a maul. --104.218.xxx.xx
