Gentlemen, I have an upscale rental (300K) and the tenant called and said there is black mold next to the registers (the vents are located in the wall instead of the floor. It is a goodman 3 and one half ton ac with gas heat. The unit is about 4years old and I have never experienced this before. I used some white vinegar to clean the mold. My question is what do you think created the mold. The unit is located in a mostly dry basement, ducts are all insulated and no water or moisture near the unit. Any ideas? Thanks --108.93.xxx.xxx

Mold? is neglected mildew - when did you last inspect the bathrom sink for any leaks? Often towels and clothes left on the floor are the source of excess moisture and using a fan timer is helpful but overcoming housekeeping laziness is really the issue you may never solve. How do you verify mold? Most likely this is dust and can be wiped off with a swiffer ceiling fan tool, again housekeeping issue you will never solve until you share the space and do this for the lazy ones. --76.188.xxx.xx

Just because it's black doesn't mean it's mold! Could be simply black-ish dust. Unless it's in a wet area, it's probably not mold.

I've seen black dust build up on our air vents before. It's not mold it's bad housekeeping. Ours are in the ceiling and I need a ladder to reach them...Plus I have bad eyesight so unless I have my glasses on I can't see it. I don't wear my glasses in the house LOL! --173.22.xx.xx

An AC cleaner called Bio-Fresh is good for cleaning this. Have they closed off any of the other vents in the house? Doing this in not good and can cause this problem. If you do an internet search you can find several causes/solutions to identify and try. --173.170.xxx.xxx

It's all about the thought process. --99.103.xxx.xxx

Had a similar problem near some exposed ductwork in a closet. Handyguy told me it was an insulation thing, and I needed to build an insulated box around it. So Google/YouTube it and see if that will help your situation.

I never ran into the problem when I lived there, so I have no clue what the difference was or why it was a problem at one moment in time, but not at another moment. --166.137.xxx.xxx

Candle soot is also a suspect. That will travel all over the first floor if they use a lot of them. One tenant called me to saw there was a lot of black stuff under her apartment door into the hallway. I had no idea what I was looking at and then saw all the candles she had lit. The furnace was pulling air through the gap under the door --73.33.xxx.xxx

Gentle Reader,

We discourage the use of the first "m" word. Black can mean many things, no reason to get less than polite with our word choices.

It could be mildew, a housekeeping problem. Running bathroom vents when taking showers should solve this. Mine are wired to the light switches so they have to shower in the dark or run the vent fan.

But I'm more concerned about SOOT. You say this is a gas furnace. Black around the supply vents can be proof of a cracked heat exchanger. And cracked heat exchangers can KILL with carbon monoxide.

Do you have a CO detector? In this case, I would definitely have the furnace checked out by not just an HVAC man, but one who specializes in gas furnaces. --98.122.x.xx
