I have the rental business and another business. I would like to be able to receive all calls on one phone. Is there a way I can set this up so that I know when a potential tenant calls so I can screen versus a business customer when I need to answer the phone? Thanks --67.53.xxx.xx

Google Voice has call screening as an option. I believe it asks the callers name and then asks you if you want that call or if you want to send it to voicemail.

Or, you could use GV for the rentals and set all calls to go to voicemail. Then use your actual number or a separate forwarded number for your other business to have those calls go straight to your phone. --73.102.xxx.xx

I use Google Voice for my rentals.

I also recently changed cell providers. T-Mobile offers something called Digits, that is very similar to GV. I'm trying it out. It lets me pick up calls for other numbers via an app on the cell phone. --131.151.xx.xx

Get one google voice number for each business, you should have separate numbers for each business anyways. Then get the google hangouts app . This will let you manage phone calls and text msg from each GV number. --12.156.xxx.xx

I have Google Voice. All calls go to one phone, but I have to guess as to whether it's coming in to my personal number or to my Google Voice number. When I actually answer, it has a little message about who's calling-- before Google Voice completes the call, it asks for the caller to give their name. Some people will hang up because they just want to make a phone call, not answer questions to complete the call.

So it's definitely not unobtrusive on the caller's end, and it's not as ideal as it would be on my end (separate ringtones would be a big plus!), but it's nice to carry only the single device, and I can do Google Voice texting on my desktop, which is nice for when I have photos and things to text to people. --96.46.xxx.xx

Deanna, You can fix the issue. Get a new number for your phone. Move your personal number to Google Voice. Now set GV to forward your personal and business calls to your new number (the one on the phone). --68.156.xx.xx

I have 2 Google Voice numbers. Instead of setting it up to show the caller's ID, I set it up to show which of my Google Voice numbers the call is coming from. So it shows as Dale's Rentals or Dale's Electric Company. I really don't like that set up much. I still would like to see the original caller's ID. --199.64.x.xxx

Is it that big of a deal? I have one phone and one phone number. I have no issues with two dozen tenants and a decent size construction business.

OR: If you just have and want to use your one cell phone, use different ring tones. My phone lets me choose a ring tone for each contact. I have my kids sound one way, people from work ring a different way. You could set up your contacts to ring one way and all others ring with the "default" ringtone. --50.240.xx.xx

Oh, wait. I see you have TWO sources of unknown callers. Sorry. That's a little more tricky. The google voice thing may be the answer. --50.240.xx.xx

I never understood why people don't want to answer the phone when a prospective tenant calls. I'd prefer they call and I answer the phone vs having them (maybe) leave a vm or text me. Now it's the "they call me, I call them, they call me back" game.

No thanks. Just answer the phone when it rings if you can. Those that you cannot get to are sent to vm ... if they leave a message - listen to it and call them back. If not - don't call them.

If you want to screen the renters because you don't want to talk with them then send them to a phone # that only gives them the option of leaving a message (like google voice). I have one but I don't use it much - I got it a few years ago because I thought it would help me without giving out my personal cell but then I use my cell for my business. The only thing I "don't" like are the ones that call or text "when they are available" which sometimes is 2:00am or 5:00am - which is when I'm sleeping. --69.201.xx.xxx

I suggest 2 30bux prepaid phones, maybe the work number add internet for another5bux - now your phone bill is 65 a month and you can set up the rental phone with your tenants saved so you know what to do when... --76.188.xxx.xx

we have 4 land lines. One is for ONLY HOME that means its number only our family has and can be answered anytime with no fear of "ITS a TENANT". We have one for rental properties, one for advertising only and does not ring and the 4th is number we give out when it is required-- like what's you home number or how can we call you back. It is set to ringer off.

We carry (in brief bag) one cell phone to give prospect tenants to call and to take pics of DV lic and pay stubs. Any maint model or serial number needed is also on that phone. It's a cheap AARP phone. --99.103.xxx.xxx

U have been using Google voice for years. My son set it up for me. It was a safety issue. I told a guy he was not going to get the unit on the phone. Short while later I received another call from a different number from same guy. He proceeded to tell me exactly where I lived and my full name. It took him very little time to Trace my personal info from having my cell phone number from the phone company. He then proceeded to tell me he was going to come get me and make me pay for denying him that unit. Fortunately I am tough when required and told him it's a castle law state and he'd be met with a hallow point from my Glock do I'd advice he didn't bother because I never missed my shot. He never did show up but when I told my son. He said Mom there's Google voice number I'm going to set up so that can't happen again.

Now I only use my Google number to contact tenants and potential tenants. I get a choice between which number to call from from my single phone number.

My old phone had separate Ring this is my new one because I busted the other one recently dropped a hammer in it. Probably gonna get it again, generic isn't worth it.

Anyway, you can get as many Google account as you want but one per phone works. However they do have other services so you can get apps if you need more. I had an applicant have 4 numbers on his one phone. Not sure why but the point is it's possible.

2 numbers are good enough for me. If I'm busy I just don't pick up. Let them leave a message. But if I have vacancy I prefer to talk to them as I have playing phone tag. I have learned to let them talk on the phone, they tend to screen themselves often given the opportunities to talk enough. Saves me from waste time showing. My units are for lower income people so going through several level of online prescreen won't work here in this area, I'd never get filled units. Hard enough finding someone who has real income and not dangerous or Court filled eviction. The rest general aren't bright enough to do online forms. I'm just thrilled when they can actually read and write enough to do an application. ..but that's a whole different story.

Point being Google voice is free. Get the app too so you can set up texting and voice mail.

Google Hangouts work too. I've used it before when I had a 3rd number for my other small business.

this is an interesting thread to me about google voice. I've been thinking about doing this but not sure really how to set it up. I like others would like to be able to seperate calls/contacts between: "Personal", Rentals, & Business". But im not tech savvy so it never happened. Would someone be so kind to share a forum/website etc that explains how to set up (for dummies) that they've found useful? thanks --174.59.xxx.xx

I don't have the answer but if you Google it probably instructions will come up. On how to install Google voice. Need first a Google email. Start there.

If you know a teen or 20 something, like your kid, grandchild, nephew, ask one of them..bet they are able to help. Mine is 26 and it takes him moment to fix anything on my phone. I just called and say I have a tech problem and we meet up.

Good luck --172.58.xxx.xx
