I have a class C/D rental that seems to get a lot of hard use. I put the self adhesive plastic " doorknob discs " on all doors. One of my special snowflakes slammed the door open so hard the doorknob drove the plastic disc THROUGH the drywall. Is there an inexpensive, neat looking way to keep the next dysfunctional rock ape from doing this?

Thanks in advance for any advice.

Class C? Take you a 1 by 6 and square it up, attach to the wall and paint to match. You could even route the edges to make it look decerotive --75.141.xxx.xxx

I do as Homer suggested and put a wooden block. If it keep happening after that then you can cut the drywall back to the studs and install a block between the studs, then drywall, then your 1x6 block. --70.178.x.xx

Sometimes I use plywood in place of drywall, this would make a good fix but they will buy doorknobs which is easier than wall repairs. --76.188.xxx.xx

The best way buy a sheet of drywall sometimes there are drywall at the Habitat for Humanity restores in the back where a edge is damaged but can cut out a good section. With a multi-tool cut the drywall from stud to stud then install a piece of drywall then get some dura bond a rough coat then fine coat sand, prime then paint. If the damaged section is brought to some store a computer match can be made where the colour can made very close. If need some help on repairing drywall then view a few videos on You Tube. A new piece of drywall will cost around $10 to $15 dollars at the most. You will not use the whole sheet but a small section. --74.220.xxx.xx

I have started using the carved wooden squares that are sold to be used with molding, if you do not want to have to miter a joint. Attach to the wall where the doorknob would hit with liquid nails, prime and paint the same color as the wall. Same durability as plywood but looks much nicer. --98.146.xxx.xx

Del,

Skip the thin ones. We use the bulkier plastic wall mounts that are hex agonal and about a half inch thick.

Before these came out I was using 6 inch decorative plaques made of wood from arts and craft stores like hobby lobby. A little stain some spray varnish and double stick mounting tape. They look nice.

In addition to all the above good ideas. Adding a 2x4 to the floor or other wood so the door can not swing open as far. Can be hard on the hinges --66.87.xx.xx

I have a thick plastic one where the front door kept impacting the plaster wall and making it look chipped and dirty. How thin is that drywall? How about a square of luan glued on there and then the plastic block from Home Depot. --73.33.xxx.xxx

I agree with the idea of a door stop. Not the hinge pin door stops because with the hollow core doors these things will often simply go through the doors. I've had better luck with the spring type that go on the bottom baseboards.

Get the longest ones you can.

If this helps...

We don't rely in the springy baseboard door stoppers because when they disappear I now have a hole in the wall. The 59 cent part is not sufficient to halt a $10 wall repair.

Plus if a kid slams a hollow core door open the door flexes beyond the springy thingy and still puts s dent in the wall.

Tiny Reminder: Sec8 requires door stops or bumpers. My first Sec8 home failed inspection due to ONE missing door bumper!

Here, the HD sells two sizes of the discs that you refer to. The small one is about 3 inches in diameter. They also have one about 6 inches, meant to cover up a hole. I always go with the big one from the start. Quite hard for tenants to ram through the wall. However, something has to give, and that something will be the knob. The turnbutton will get banged so much that it will end up recessed into the knob. I often wonder why tenants just cannot seem to judge the amount of force necessary to achieve everyday tasks, and use such excessive force. They twist lightbulbs into the sockets until the bulb breaks. They pull on ceiling fan chains like they are Quasimodo ringing the bells of Notre Dame. They push open doors like they are trying to surprise somebody and scare them. --70.90.xx.xxx

I sometimes will cut the drywall stud to stud, and run a 2 by 4 across the studs at doorknob height. Then, the cheap round plastic door guard will protect the new drywall.

I also use the hinge type door stops. A four by four inch piece of sheet metal glued to the door keeps the hinge style door stop from breaking into the hollow door -- I started to do this when I was repairing door-knob damaged wall and had the door stop piercing into the door. I needed to repair the door, and I had handy a sheet of aluminum, so I used that to repair the door. And I cut a bunch of 4 by four pieces for future use. Then, I just paint the metal piece to match the door.

I was refering to sheets of plywood, this is normal for my stairways to keep the ceiling in place - tired of fixing plaster crashes, this area gets hit with appliances and furniture - so let them put in and take away piece by piece reminders of moving stupidity, in your case stud to stud plywood - it comes in 1/2inch... --76.188.xxx.xx

Thanks Don/PA for the laugh. Although I have to say, the tenant that replaces a bulb would probably be a 1st for me. I have broken bulbs when trying to remove them from a filthy, crud crusted oven (not my home), that had been burned out for so long it was rusted to boot! --71.51.xxx.xxx
