Cast iron ball valve cracked when frozen and leaks. Replacing will be difficult. can crack be repaired? Must sustain 100psi pressure. --71.115.xxx.xx

For safety reasons I would replace and be finished, no worries later about the crack leaking. --72.24.xx.xx

This is one of those situations where you need to think unconventionally.

I've put main shut off valves right next to existing valves which were not working properly. By adding and not replacing the jobs became easier.

Other situations I have seen people use unions in line so that you can remove a length of pipe to service it. (poor explanation on my part but I have the music blaring in my ears so I can't think).

Perhaps you can eliminate the valve in the present location and put in another in a more convenient place.

I would replace it,i don't think cast iron is repairable but even if it is it is not worth the risk.If this is on the main coming in turn it off outside,if you can't or don't want to be seen doing that you can get dry ice at a welding supply house and put that on the main below where you are working and that will freeze it and allow you to change it --72.231.xxx.xxx

Because you would need to remove and disassemble the valve to make any repair it would make sense to put in a replacement, most ball valves have a wog rating of 350-600. --76.188.xxx.xx

Buy some pipe unions so replacement would not difficult if the ball valve is connected to copper pipe. If galvanized iron then buy some thread fittings. Eventually the ball valve is going to burst open. With the water off a chop saw then remove the ball valve then it is matter of installing the new ball valve. Try to buy valve at a plumbing wholesale operation instead of the big box stores as the quality will be better. --74.220.xxx.xx

I think I have gotten the message. Replacing it is really the only option. I was hoping for a quick fix but safety and knowledge that it is fixed properly are comforting.

Thank you all for your responses.
