I got my oldest applicant today, her birth year is 1922.. I asked the grand daughter, wanted to make sure that it was not a typo.. that is 95 years old?? Not many of us can last that long. I haven't met with that applicant yet.. She has 2 roommates related, 65 and 70 years old respectively.

My 2nd oldest tenant lived in the same building for over 40 years, he passed away last winter while clearing the snow from his car, heart attack otherwise completely healthy.. 92 years old.. very nice guy..

My grandmother, who loaned me $1500 seed money to get started, was a "tough old bird" (her words) and lived to 98.

Are those roommates or her children?

My oldest tenant is 79, and she's in better shape than me. :(

One of my grandmother's lived to 105. Used to get letters from the President. And Willard Scott wished her well. (Anybody remember him?)

I'll be happy to just get another 5 more years. Going downhill fast. Live well, play hard, die young I guess.

I'm older than all of my tenants except one. And she shares with her daughter, both on social security (daughter on disability). Two of my grandparents lived to 92, one was 87, and one dropped at 61. Just had an aunt 98 have cancer surgery.

I'd like more older tenants, less drama and probably stay put. --71.51.xxx.xxx

My mom passed at 94. I took care of her while running the business. She still drove at 87 but I had to take the keys and sell her yellow Cadillac eventually to get her to stop. Could not see over the dashboard anymore.

I guess you will make sure she has a caretaker come in to check on her right? --73.33.xxx.xxx

95!!!

My oldest tenant was in his late 80's. He was there a few years, then he got married and bought a house!

Now our oldest is "only" 81. Lives with her former daughter-in-law (divorced from the other's son.)

She travels all the time. --173.22.xx.xx

Ally, you probably can't even outright ask that she has a caretaker. It may violate fair housing. --50.107.xxx.xxx

My mom will turn 96 in Feb. She is in better shape than many of my contemporaries. My friend inherited an elderly resident when he bought a building. she passed at an advanced age. She and her, deceased, husband had rented the apartment when they were first married. When he ad her nephew and executor were clearing out and going through her unit they found newspapers from both VJ and VE days. --134.228.xxx.xx

Question: What are the protected classes under federal law?

Answer:

The Fair Housing Act, which is the federal law governing housing discrimination, includes the following seven protected classes: race, color, religion, national origin, sex, disability, and familial status. --173.22.xx.xx

WMH, you are correct. Age is a protected class, but not under fair housing.

That being said, I absolutely wouldn't test it on anyone over 18. Find another reason. --50.107.xxx.xxx

It is a protected class in some states, but not federally.

Personally, I'd rather an elderly person. Unless something drastic happens - like getting married LOL - they aren't going to move without good reason! --173.22.xx.xx

Federally it is protected but not with regard to housing.

Federally it is covered by ADEA - Age Discrimination Employment Act --24.101.xxx.xxx
