It is snowing in north AL right now,...it is extremely rare to get any snow in December. All it takes is 1/2 inch of snow and my town gets shut-down. The state troopers are probably putting road blocks on the interstate highways right now,... no one here knows to how drive in snow. Many people here think they know how to drive in snow but they are usually the first ones to slide into the ditch or in the river! Tow truck drivers make a fortune here when it snows.

Last night, with just the forecast of snow, all of the grocery stores here got over-run with freaked out customers buying bread, milk and peanut butter/jelly. It is insane here.

It happens everywhere in the South, Roy. Here too. There is some reason for the panic though. No snowplows or salt to treat the roads, and it tends to ice over rather than being pretty snow.

I used to live in Northern Maine...the snowplows and salt trucks would sit idling WAITING for the snow to start. Big difference. --173.22.xx.xx

I am waiting for the real snow - the stuff that sticks about 10-14 inches and I can get my snowmobile onto, I got another 4wheel drive truck after lightning 3 years ago made my Jeep unreliable, those farm fields go quickly when speeds get over 110 but the fresh air comes quickly - the smiles are wider and the screams from a few riders are a lot louder. After having my sprained foot on ice for 6 weeks it sounds like the best therapy - the battery is in my shop but for the fun of it I tried to start with the rope and it came to life on the 3rd pull, faster than some lawn mowers... --76.188.xxx.xx

Enjoy your pbj's, stay warm and cozy, and find a good book! :) --96.46.xxx.xx

GOOD! LOL Now maybe my BIL in Alabama will shut up about how much better the temp is there than it is here in MI. I do get him back though, every July/Aug I call him up and tell him the temp here while he is melting down there. --97.95.xxx.xx

The outside temperature here during the day is zero degrees celsius which is right at freezing where there is dusting of snow then the roads are completely clear as the salt was put down on the roads. They measure accumulation in centimeters where it is less than one centimeter. Later on this week there is a strong possibility there is going to be more snow fall. --207.164.xxx.xxx

Roy, no,It wouldn't give you enough heat, especially up in this part of the country. I put it in the living room in front of the fireplace that was here,a couple of years ago. I closed off the fireplace opening with a 3 x 5' 1/2" hardiboard.did some fancy spray painting to make it look like brick.got the pellet stove from Lowes, one that someone had bought and couldn't get it to work the way they thought it should, kept watching the price come down to what I thought was reasonable.got the manager and asked him lets make a deal.we did around $200.They put it in the van, after I moved the tools around a bit.I also had to install 8' of twin stainless from the stove up the chimney, supposed to run it all the way to the top,but didn't think I needed to because the fireplace was a perfectly drawing fireplace.it uses about about a bag of pellets a day and warms up the downstairs area. The house has a gas hot air furnace controlled with regular thermostat.so furnace doesn't need to work in the day time, when the pellet boy is going.the little stove was made somewhere in Pennsylvania.I had a problem with the auger that controls the flow of pellets into the burner box, called the factory, they said to keep the phone active and keep close to the stove.I did and they cured the problem, like magic. The thing is quite heavy.I got it into place by myself, but really should have had help, strong of the back, weak of the mind, you know the story? They normally are around $1300 to $1600 .but even at that ,probably worth it.My daughter in Boston got me hooked on it.They might be all you need in your part of the country.charlie........... ........... ..........very little ash residue, just a quick touch of the vacuum in the morning after being off all night.has a glass door so you see the blaze. Cheerful..................... --174.199.xx.xx

In my farm area the pellet stove is used if it has the ability to also handle wood slabs, basically the pellets are wood chips from a sawmill, and very commonly used is corn, Charlie you could prolly get more heat from your unit if you can find a place to get a small fan to deliver the heat into a wider area, I see these often in 1400-2000sq ft places with a electric kitchen, there is no gas from the ground or a tank. --76.188.xxx.xx

Vee, there is a built in fan, which kicks in after the thing runs for ten minutes or so and heats up the front area where the burner box is.these pellets are like rabbit food, you couldn't tell the difference,a rabbit could or a dog.as far as chopped up wood is concerned, just wouldn't work,A friend has a wood burning Box stove,I think Vermont made, the pellets wouldn't work in it,but you don't need a fan on it.makes the house like an oven.......charlie........and you're a pizza............................. --174.199.xx.xx

Winter Storm Warning here Roy. About five inches already on the ground, 3-5 inches today, 4-8 inches more tonight when the winds shift and lake effect machine gets turned on, finally 3-5 for tomorrow.

Yet I have to tell you, I would rather be up here where the yahoos do know how to drive in the crap and there is plenty of snow removal equipment. Just a single inch without the proper tires and tools can make for a bad day.

I like this time of year as I shift out of the LL mode and more into investor mode as seasonal prices kick in. --24.101.xxx.xxx
