Bats, bats, and more bats!!! I have closed every hole I can find on this building with no success! I have exhausted all options I know of just short of spending the 2 GRAND to have a company come out and essentially do the same thing I did of sealing all access holes.

My last ditch option is ultrasonic bat repeller noise makers. Anyone have any experience with these???

Bat cams!

Why not put up a trail camera to see where they are getting in? If there's a gable with a vent on the gable, the screening on the inside of the vents sometimes wears out or gets torn allowing access. Also check soffit vents.

Why not put up some bathouses outside to encourage them to evacuate your main house? --23.121.xx.xxx

Also, be very careful if you have to clean up bat guano in the attic. It can carry rabies. Use the mask, the bleach and gloves. --23.121.xx.xxx

Had one in the Cute Cape Cod last year. Tenant called and I went over. He was peering out from one of the grills over the vents on the side of the fireplace. Scooted off somewhere. I checked in the basement and there was not a way for the bat to get into the living area. I suspect he came down around the chimney which is stone covered. You might want to put a screen over your chimney. They like cave holes and a chimney probably looks like a cave to them.

Someone told me recently that they had a bat in the house and every family member had to get a rabies shot after that. --73.33.xxx.xxx

Also, izzit true that bat-poo can carry rabies....first time I have heard of that. Learn something new every day --173.63.xx.xx

just googled-up the CDC and they said no rabies from guano or even touching the fur. Advised caution if you get bat spit on mucous membranes. --173.63.xx.xx

When bats squeeze through their access hole they usually poop. Try to identify bat guano on the side of the building or along the roof line. This will tell you where they’re getting in. --24.147.xx.xxx

Build a BatCave, and advise commisioner Gordon... The poop is very good soil conditioner, they must have insects to eat, do you have ponding water nearby? --76.188.xxx.xx

I too heard that bat droppings are used as a natural fertilizer. However, I once saw a report on the Nipah Virus in Malaysia that inspired Soderbergh's filim, Contagion. Infected bats gave the virus to hungry pigs who in turn infected humans.

Anyway, best of luck with stopping the bat from entering the unit. --67.170.xxx.xxx

I have bats periodically too, and it is a problem because one call to a city, and they condemn the building. I had a bat flying around my bedroom. I killed with a broom, but I am not sure if it bit or scratched me since I was asleep, I assume not. They say you can't tell so sometimes they make people get rabies shots, especially babies that can't talk. --108.176.xxx.xxx

I didn't know they pooped as they squeezed through a hole. I had poop everywhere in my attic but concentrated in areas that I thought were roosting.

Fixed my problem by using rat sticky traps baited with peanut butter.

If the house is currently vacant under rehab can also try mothball flakes but they can smell too strong if someone is living there. --72.95.xxx.xx

I agree with the idea of building bat houses -- give them a better place to live. Bats eat a ton of mosquitos -- I don't mind them around my area at all. Can often see them a dawn and dusk in the summer.

Also, as someone else pointed out, Richard[MI] is wrong. You can't get rabies from bat guano. It's not a concern.

My understanding is that the ultrasonic repellers are not particularly effective. The University of Florida had a similar problem with their stadium. Bats like their home roosts. And are you going to keep the repellers plugged in indefinitely?

Look harder for gaps. Bats can squeeze through a 1/4" gap between the soffit and side of the house. I would go over there at dusk and look for their exit point. How many bats are we talking about?

On the bright side, it's getting colder, so they should be leaving soon for colder hibernacula. If you fix up the property quick and sell it before spring, someone else will have to deal with the problem. :) --204.210.xxx.xxx

In Pa bats are protected.

At sunset g up on the roof and have a look see. They are not going to be hiding from you. I had a problem a couple of years back and found that they were accessing the building via an old chimney.

As soon as I had the access point ID, the next afternoon I tossed a tennis ball down followed by a bug bomb. I had a smoke bomb at the ready but didn't need the third level to scare them out........and when the 8-10 of them flew out - they were not the only ones scared! Almost crapped myself on a ladder --24.101.xxx.xxx
