Fabric Gal’s post about the tenant on SSI who is mental, pays less than market rent and now asking them not to come around to maintain their property got me to thinking.

Folks, especially folks who know they don’t bring much to the table, are increasingly aggressive in their demands, taking advantage to our current society’s permissive attitiudes.

I made an New Year’s resolution last year to not let anyone, especially those who know nothing, nothing at all about me and my business tell me how I need to run my business. It has been very freeing. I just say “No”. Practice saying “NO” in front of the mirror every day, You will be amazed at the positive results you will get.

This affects more than just LLing. One of the big reasons I left nursing. --98.146.xxx.xx

I just lay out all policies in the lease. They sign before they get the keys. Nothing to argue about. Nothing for me to stress about.

If the rental property is not maintained the house or building quickly becomes a slum. The basis for rent control is not control rent but bankrupt the private rental housing providers. Unfortunately in the meantime the government has legislated slums while at the same exempting the government owned rental units. --69.79.xxx.xxx

This is one reason I am not renting to Section 8 tenants anymore. That entitlement attitude (where everything in life should be free) is something most Section 8 tenants have and just gets on my nerves.

Just say NO to Section 8 callers. --68.63.xxx.xxx

I decided to adopt that attitude about a month ago. I basically decided I do t want to do this anymore so it's kind of a win. It took a lot of stress away.

My attitude is if they don't like it they can move because I hope to start selling and I don't want to deal with new unknown tenants. I say that but good new tenants seem to fall in my lap so who knows if I'll change my mind but just feeling it's an option has helped.

I had one the other day complaining about her stove. The screws on the handle loosen occasionally and need to be tightened and two of her stove burners don't sit right. Went to check it out and screws are fine, the original proper ones. She bought drip pans that don't fit and that's why her burners don't sit right. I explained there was nothing wrong with the burners and that she'd need to tighten the screws occasionally as I had no explanation or cure for that.

I also mentioned that I'd be glad to remove the stove and she could get one she liked better. I suspect I won't be hearing from her again. --173.170.xxx.xxx

Lisa (FL) -Most of my tenants do not own basic home tools like a flat head or Phillips screw driver. This explains why the interior door knobs are always loose and sometimes just about to drop off. --68.63.xxx.xxx

I completely understand, and it echoes Brad's policy of Zero Tolerance. What tenants can conjure up in their defense of their ignorance or errant behavior is really something.

Oh my, RathdrumGal, thank you for having cared for your patients, and it must have taken so much patience and effort. Indeed as Charlie noted, a relative was interning as a doctor and would pull off crazy days-long shifts during his residency.

Anyway, thanks for the thread and the posts. --67.170.xxx.xxx
