Hello, I have several cracks in my shower base. I've tried those epoxy/cloth repair kits but they last for a few months only. The best way is to install an inlay over the shower base, but the shower is quarter-circle in shape. I just can't find an inlay of that shape. Do you guys suggest I purchase a section of shower wall and cut it to shape and glue in place myself? I can't think of any other possibility.

Thanks,

Steve.

What do you think caused the shower base to crack? It seems to me if you have several cracks & they keep reappearing then you need to have better support under the base. Before you attempt your next repair, you might consider using some low expansion spray foam to help beef up the underside of the shower base.

Whenever we install either a shower base or a tub, we spray foam under it then have someone stand in it for the few minutes it takes for the foam to set up. --72.93.xxx.xxx

I used to do relaxing for a short period. I did about 3 pro inlays. They are expensive to have done. I think you can buy inlays custom at Napco.

You can support underneath with just wood. An inlay is just fiberglass usually, the adhesive and bonding are what will fail on you

Steve,

Gotta stop the movement/flexing. Gotta get under it and shore it up with something hard like wood.

Sometimes we can dismantle the shower kit and rebuild under the base.

Sometimes we can cut a hole from the basement in the floor under the shower and reach in with some blocks and shims.

Once we make it solid we've been coating the base with FlexSeal (as seen on TV) or GacoFlex silicone roofing "paint".

You install a ditra schluter product then install tile where this may work. --69.79.xxx.xxx

You may be able to buy a square or rectangular inlay and cut it to fit if it’s big enough. I’ve put a couple of floor inlays in bathtubs with good success. We go ahead and fill around the edge with fiberglass to cover where the inlay meets the tub. We drill holes in the floor we are covering and shoot spray foam under it. The last one I bought the best price I could find was on HD’s website. --70.178.x.xx

Dont count on the spray foam helping much. It helps some.

But remember the foam will compress when it has weight on it and does not spring back.

Best just to go ahead and replace. Do it right for long term maintenance.

I would consider it a temp fix. But we use 4 x 8 sheets of 1/2" & 3/4" PVC for a lot of things.

From custom bath trim, crawl space doors, cabinet floors, shelf above tub for shampoo.

Replaced a tub faucet. But found the wall tile was not in good shape in that area. And going from a 3 handle to 1 handle.

A large 1/2" PVC panel with a routed edge over the tile.

Looked pretty good and will last. Tenant in place so no down time with only one bath.

I would go to a boat repair place and ask if someone would be able to look at this, they may want to do real fancy gelcoat overlay but your purpose is making it water tight, you can buy the kit for about 30bux. --76.188.xxx.xx

As a professional contractor and landlord I'd first use a deep penetrating moisture meter to detect if there is water damage underneath. If I found there was a small leak that allowed water seepage, then I'd use my micro camera probe and view to see if things could be salvaged or if I needed to tear out the base and start over.

In many cases, a bad drain flange/drain that was screwed to the prefabricated shower base failed (gasket), and started a deterioration. I had this happen to a third bathroom in a house/rental of mine. I cut out the drain, without any damage to the shower base. I dried everything out and was able to install a new drain to the drain pipe and inject epoxy into the voids to support the shower base. --47.156.xx.xx

Tell us about this epoxy? Where does one get it, and what do you need to inject it? --108.176.xxx.xxx
