How many times have we heard that one?

Tenant texts: "I deposited $X today and will have the rest by later this week. There was a mess up at my bank."

Me: "Thank you for the update. I'm showing a balance of $Y remain as of today...add $5 for each extra day starting tomorrow. Consider bringing this mess up to your bank manager's attention since it is costing additional late fees. Maybe they will reimburse you."

I like to be helpful, humorous and keep them aware I was not born yesterday.

did happen to me once. her bank had actually frozen her account bc of suspicious transactions on her account. she borrowed the cash from her bf to pay me by the 3rd for no late fees. I don’t rent to anyone who can’t pay. it’s all in the screening. --24.178.xxx.xx

2 years ago a little over $1,000 was deposited in error in my checking account. Of course I could see the person's account number on the deposit slip online (which they wrote correctly) was the same as mine but 2 digits flip-flopped. So the teller made the error.

Highly likely, the tenant was giving you the run around, but such errors do happen.

Of course I notified the bank of the error. No good Samaritan reward was given for my actions.

I've heard this too many times to count. I would work with a tenant if this proved to be true, but none ever has. Everyone is blamed but themselves. --98.175.xxx.xxx

@Kurt, I remember one time, back when I was cashing checks in the mail, I made a deposit.

"Do you want your balance?"

"OK."

There was a good $32,000 in my account that shouldn't have been.

I don't know whose money it had been, or why it got put in my account--- but we got that cleared up reeeeeally quickly. :) --96.46.xxx.xx

Be not so quick to notify the bank of deposits to your account in error. I did and they deducted it from my account immediately. At about the same moment, the bank employee who made the error also deducted it-- making the total deductions twice the amount of the error and making my account overdrawn. Lots of time and aggravation to get it all corrected.

But do not withdraw any undeserved money from your account. --66.226.xx.xx

Banks do make mistakes on a regular basis. I had a snow plowing client whose bank made a massive error with their automatic bill paying. The bank ended up sending out letters of apology to all of the people & businesses that were effected by the error. They also paid any late fees, service fees, etc that my client experienced. Last week one of my banks deposited an extra $2,638.00 into one of my accounts. --72.93.xxx.xxx

I actually had a mess up at the bank and caught it. Old gal saw two same amounts on the deposit slip and told me I wrote it down twice. But I had four checks and two had the same amount. So the old bag can't count to 4. I had to call the manager. I won't get in her line and if she's the only one there, I leave and come back. It was going to be a seven hundred dollar bank error. --73.33.xxx.xxx

Sid, I am sitting here with my shoes off still counting the saga mentioned, so many based on holding 2 days to 2 weeks on suspicious check deposits that -freezes- the account of a person who has had a balance in the 3 to low 4 digits for years. Unlike childhood obesity that steadily creeps in over - well they are children until teen age years arrive, no sub-compact car for college use, gotta get a caddy! --76.188.xxx.xx

1. car broken down

2. family medical emegency

3. bank screwed up.

4 my boss didnt pay me on time

5. My grandmother died

etc --74.104.xxx.xx

Hey all...

I'm not saying I think banks CAN'T screw up; mine has once or twice...in 20 years or so. This tenant, however, is frequently late by 2-3 days...not enough for me to worry about eviction, but he has tried to "forego" late fees in the past. My guess was this was another attempt to pass off the responsibility along, so I was just sure to remind him I stay on top of it. If this is a legit screw up from his bank, I think they do owe him reimbursement for his late charges.

I phrased my answer on purpose to say that I appreciate the information, but it's between you and your bank. I don't JUDGE whether he is telling the truth or not. The truth in this case is irrelevant to the final outcome from my perspective. The payment is late; therefore, fees are owed.

Sorry about adding in "after the fact" information. I forget sometimes you guys/gals aren't privy to all the facts I have. --173.19.xx.xxx

hey Sid, did you ever post an update on the "extra" money deposited to your account ... didn't the depositor say it was their final payment or something? --72.95.xx.xxx

Funerals are a frequently used excuse. We have also had several tenants where the account is frozen by the IRS. That is always fun. --24.233.xxx.xx

Nichole,

I forgot to post an update on that, so thanks for the reminder. The money was never "claimed" by anyone else, but just in case I'm keeping it set to the side. No tenants are late/short on rent and no one has terminated a lease. The mystery remains. This is one of the two screw ups I referenced. You are correct in your recollection about what the depositor said. And the teller said she recognized him as someone she had accepted money from before on our behalf. The weird thing is, I had no one that matched the description she gave living in our units. The description was unique and not at all based on clothing or vehicle. I'll leave it at that. --173.19.xx.xxx
