I've noticed something interesting. Recently cell phone antennas have been appearing on the roofs of some apartment buildings here in Denver. One of my friends is upset with her landlord for doing that due to potential health risks. No one else in the building seems to care. The landlord (of course) won't install any kind of shielding, and she is now looking into moving.

I don't know how I would handle it if a telco came to me with a proposal like that.

The extra income would be great, it would have little, if any affect on keeping the building full. But then there is that nagging worry about any health risks and legal exposure.

How would you handle it?

I would check with my insurance agent to make sure there's no issues with coverage. If no issues I would enjoy the new found revenue stream. I would put some of the money towards property improvements to lessen Uncle Sam's share. --73.79.xxx.xx

Depends on how much they are paying.

Health risks can't be any worse than walking down the street. We are surrounded on all sides by cell phones throwing and receiving signals, so whatever waves they are working on are everywhere. --174.216.xx.xx

I wouldn't be concerned with insurance issues, I'd be concerned if there were actual problems.

And yes, those waves are everywhere. I don't think tenants are very concerned about this.

Maybe they'll ask me next!

At my friend's building it was a huge project taking over 2 weeks. They had run new electrical to the building. --174.51.xxx.xx

I would tell that tenant that she can't smoke her cigarettes on the roof any longer.

I would volunteer to help her adjust and walk with her the first few trips she makes to the beer store. Maybe Monday and Tuesday, but the rest of the week would be her's as I work long hours and need my evenings.

They can be a good revenue assistant, at a building I service each carrier pays about 2500 bux and 2 years ago a seperate electric meter base was added there with 10 meters. --76.188.xxx.xx

A conservative # in NW New Jersey is 3,000/m rent. Around here, zoning is next to impossible to get approved unless you're politically connected. --73.195.xxx.xxx

re power/danger

cell phones Towers emit a lot more EMF's than the cell phones EMF's than you get from others walking down the street,.Also they are on 24/7.

Yeah I would be concerned,..humans were never exposed to this until very lately,..BTW have you ever heard of the inverse square law?

You're right, Mark. Being near a transmitter (even a cell phone itself) is never a good thing healthwise. I have never heard of the law but I am familiar with its premise and how distance and power are related.

The landlord side of me would say, sure. let's do it! But on the other side I don't know if I would want to be exposing people to those levels of EMF.

Cell towers are the gift that keeps on giving!

I'm playing around with a parcel now that has one on it, I might buy out the rest of the lease. I want the land though, the cell tower is purely secondary. --24.45.xxx.xx

Is there any solid evidence (real actual scientific evidence) that cell towers cause health issues? I'm not talking about the social(its engineers who sometimes put misinformation out there. I mean real science. If not then get all over it. Makes good business sense. --71.213.xx.xxx

Health issues are not a concern. Health PROBLEMS would be. It hasn't been settled. There are plenty of arguments on both sides. However, some wouldn't want to put those devices their roof and then have to deal with a cancer cluster in their building 10 years later.

99% of tenants don't care, and from a business perspective it might make sense. --174.51.xxx.xx

So it sounds like you've been unable to determine if it causes any health problem. You certainly don't sound comfortable doing it so don't. Very simple decision. --71.213.xx.xxx
