I just finished reading the book "Sugar Blues" and astonished by the corruption that got us the health mess where we are today. The book calls refined sugar poison, and it is rightly so. If you care about your health, read it and cut sugar from your diet completely.
With wife's recommendation, I started keto diet similar to Paleo diet about a month ago, no carb, no sugar, 2 meals a day.. Have my fatty breakfast at 7AM, then juicy steak dinner at 5PM.. got all day to work on my properties.. Never experienced the sweaty, jittery sugar low which most of us experience once a while.. (ie. had a full breakfast at 7AM and feel hungry/weak by 10AM)
If you are interested in healthy living on top of pursuing all the wealth, Read the book. google Dr Eric Berg and watch some of the related youtube testimonials..
I have a sweet tooth, my favorite desert is tiramisu. I haven't touched anything that has sugar since I started the diet and I don't miss it..

It's funny how every diet is a form of calorie counting. Seems everything bad for you has a high calorie count and everything good for you has a low calorie count. All these diets do is arrange the foods to meet calorie requirements. However humans need a balanced diet within moderation. Too much of one thing or too little of one thing over a period of time can be harmful. --108.69.xxx.xxx |

Thanks for sharing. I'm a type 2 diabetic and it has been a losing battle. Because the body turns other carbs into sugar, too before storing it as fat.
Bread, white rice, ... here we go!
Ketchup having insane amounts of the stuff, too (just an example). Being a Vegetarian complicates matters. Am having scrambled egg on bread (am in Vietnam these days). Got protein shakes. But the body can only absorb about 8 grams per hour. And those fitness guys recommending a "post workout shake" might use yesterday's shake with digestion taking >30 hours in most adults ;)
Many small portions throughout the day might help someone. Good luck! --171.224.xx.xx |

Talked to someone on Saturday who said that they had lost 40 lbs since April (?) on the keto diet, and her husband had lost 30 lbs.
Was it WMH who had had such success with Wheatbelly, which is very similar to the keto diet? DH did Wheatbelly, and lost about 30 lbs in 3 months by cutting out wheat and sugar.
My biggest obstacle was having to give up my tea with honey. After talking with my friends this weekend, I figured I could make the experiment between now and Thanksgiving and see if anything came of it... I started yesterday. Wish me luck, and I wish you luck, too! --96.46.xxx.xx |

I like Keto diet, cos I don't have to think about what I eat other than no wheat, rice, sugar..

I'm a Type II diabetic and have been eating essentially Keto (Low carb, moderate protein, good fats) for about 4 years now. I am able to maintain almost normal blood sugars.
Basically I eat no grains at all. No rice, no root vegetables at all. Instead of milk I use heavy cream (less sugar.)
All, ketosis is not the same as ketoacidosis. ketogenic-diet-resource.com/ketoacidosis.html
Highly recommend Maria Emmerich's cookbooks and blog. She has done great work creating delicious, family-friendly Keto recipes. --173.22.xx.xx |

This is not to say a healthy diet is bad (it's good). This is not to say eat 2 cups sugar every day. This is to say...
PORTION CONTROL is the most important thing regardless of what you eat or what you do.
Call me a cynic ("S i d, you're a cynic!"), but I don't follow the fad diets and workout programs. Why not? They are not necessary.
I am healthier overall than most people I know age 20 and older. I do not belong to a gym, nor do I have a personal trainer. I have never seen a DVD of nor have I done a single session of "P90-X" or "Insanity." I do not follow "diets" like Keto, Paleo, Whole 30, Atkins, etc.
I run on the streets near my house year round: 98 degrees or 8 degrees. I've got a weight set in my basement. I consume moderate amounts of pretty much whatever I want (including coffee, dark chocolate, wheat bread, beef, and beer) and exercise regularly 5 times per week (3 days cardio, 2 days weights). I have 3 young un's I wrestle with. :-)
Had a blood draw 1 month ago at my yearly physical. Every number (cholesterol, glycemic index, and 8 or so others) is good or great. Blood pressure 112/72. Heart rate 52 bpm.
From what I have seen in people around me, most "diets" and workout program are things people do for several months - 2 years then fall back into their old ways because they do not fix the underlying problem of simply eating too much and not doing regular exercise. They see the diets as a magic pill to fix these problem, but they eventually get tired of it. And the workout plans are crazy unless you intend to be an ultra-marathon competitor or American Ninja Warrior.
Lifestyles last forever. If Keto is your lifestyle...okay. Check back in about 5 years and let's evaluate it. I won't say it doesn't work, but I've never seen anyone around me last more than a few years on any diet unless their immediate life depended on it (i.e. diabetes). Even then, I've known diabetics who won't deny themselves the things they crave.
I've been doing my lifestyle since age 15 (without the beer until age 22)...so I've got a 27-year track record to back me up on this.
YMMV, but as for me, this works: Eat a balanced, well-proportioned diet and exercise regularly.

Btw, forgot to mention diabetes (type 2) runs strong on my mom's side. My maternal grandfather died in early 70s as a result. My mom has to watch what she eats, but in general she follows the same plan I do and her numbers have been good for the past decade since starting to monitor portion sizes. She'll still drink a beer...maybe 2 on a rare occasion such as a birthday.
My brother was diagnosed pre-diabetic about 5 years ago. He ate too much pasta. Since cutting back (i.e. don't go for seconds, thirds, fourths!) his numbers are in the tolerable range.
All this is to say I have known "risk" factors, but keeping them in check does not require rigorous commitment to any type of diet or special workout program. We avoid eating large meals and all have regular exercise routines. --173.19.xx.xxx |

elliot...notice I qualified my response several times that for MANY people it's not a fix. Sure, for some people who are atypical, it works. Also, while 4 years of doing anything is commendable in our "quick fix" society...it's also 14.8% as long as I've been doing my plan (27 years). This is not to discount WMH's success--I think it's a great beginning--but I have a bit more experience with what I call a permanent lifestyle alteration.
52 bpm is normal for someone who exercises regularly. I'm not a marathon runner by any stretch, but some of those guys/gals get down in the low 40s when at rest. Could I drop dead today due to heart failure? I suppose, but my Doc says based on everything he's seeing today and trends in aging, I should live to be 90+ years old and I should highly functional up until the end. Assuming no incurable diseases or dementia. Hard to predict anything for certain, but the indicators are all there. We'll see, I guess. He's younger than me so he may be around to see if his prediction is correct. (wink) --173.19.xx.xxx |

I've pretty much always been a large woman. Over the years I have tried every diet out there. The only one that worked for me was Atkins--and that was only once. I lost 32 lbs, but the minute I went on the required "maintenance diet." That was re-introducing sweet veggies (corn, carrots)and some fruits--it all came slowly back. Going back on the main diet didn't work a 2nd time.
With people who don't have willpower (and most fat people DON'T-that's how they got there) portion control is a want that never happens. Doesn't work. A sugar-addict is like a drug addict and the craving drives you so fast you don't know its happening till it's too late.
Just controlling intake (type and amounts) won't work either unless you also overcome the other ruling factors in your body, like an imbalance of gut bacteria. Too much candita (and others) scream for their sugar needs, sending signals to the brain, multiply, and overwhelm the good bacteria.
I have recently started a 'non-grains' and no sweets diet. Today is my 15th day. No grains means no pasta either, and I am trying to minimize rice and potatoes because starch turns into sugars too. But I am also using a PRE-biotic as well as a PRO-biotic. The prebiotic feeds the good gut bacteria as you starve the bad. The probiotic adds more good bacteria to what you have. The double whammy tips the gut balance back to the good side. THEN your control of intake has a much better chance of working, and your relapses are minimized.
Controlling sugar intake has plusses other than the normal expected ones. I am sleeping better at night. I am less tired thu-out the day, even my fingernails seem to be getting harder and growing longer. Not sure I understand that--but I'll take it. I'd like to lose 100 lbs! Let's see how long I can maintain this diet. --108.87.xx.xxx |

Sid, I do not want to lose body parts so I can eat a candy bar, and I depend on my eyesight to live, so trust me, this is a lifestyle. If I eat a half-slice of bread, or a bite of rice, or any forbidden food: my blood sugar will spike so high I should probably go to the hospital. If I get accidentally "sauced" at a restaurant (flour or corn starch not revealed in a recipe) I will know immediately after dinner.
I haven't a piece of fruit in four years. I'd kill YOU for a grapefruit LOL! But I won't give up MY toes.
It hasn't done much for my weight but I have thyroid issues too. I lost 50 pounds but also a good deal of hair, etc. It grew back, along with 20 pounds. Stabilized now for at least 3 years.
But it has prevented me from having to go on insulin. --173.22.xx.xx |

Keto Tiramisu: room-temp cream cheese, add a bit of sour cream if you like (I do) and some instant coffee/espresso to taste. Mix well and add tiny bits of stevia or that type of natural sweetener. You are going for LESS sweet rather than more of course.
Tastes like heaven if you haven't had the real thing in a while. If you want crust, grind up some walnuts, a bit of melted butter and sprinkle on top, or crush into a muffin cup and bake till crispy, then add filling. --173.22.xx.xx |

Couple years ago, while vacationing at Acapulco, we wondered into local market and bought some avocado. Oh boy, it tasted so delicious, I felt depressed having to eat the tasteless avocado back at US. Even today, I am eating those tasteless avocado every day for the health benefit.

Elliot have you heard of Dr. Jason Fung?
"Dr. Fung wrote two books “The Obesity Code” and the “Complete Guide to Fasting – Heal Your Body Through Intermittent, Alternate-Day, and Extended Fasting”.
Dr. Fung is a Nephrologist (Kidney Disease Specialist), with a practice in Toronto, Canada. As Type 2 diabetes is, by far, the leading cause of kidney disease, Dr. Fung naturally became interested in this subject. It became clear to him that the conventional treatment of type 2 diabetes was seriously flawed.
Despite patients' best efforts to manage their diabetes, taking their insulin and following the recommended diet and so on, they would still end up with complications such as kidney disease, requiring dialysis, or they'd need amputations, or they'd go blind.
Dr. Fung became interested in the underlying cause, or aetiology, of obesity. He challenged conventional thinking of the “calories in, calories out” theory – that excessive calories cause obesity, and that calorie restriction promotes weight loss.
As we all have seen, calorie restriction diets do not work. We all lose weight at first, then we gain it all back, and even more.
Dr. Fung asserts that the cause of obesity is too much insulin, not excessive calories. If excessive insulin is the cause of obesity, then solution to lose weight is to lower insulin.
Dr. Fung believes that the most effective way to reduce insulin is through intermittent, alternate day, and extended fasts. Eating very low carb, high fat and moderate protein brings down insulin effectively, but fasting brings insulin down even faster." --173.22.xx.xx |

She also bought 35% hydrogen peroxide and follows oxygen therapy.. Which makes all the sense.. If our body doesn't take in enough oxygen, it won't be able to rid off toxins/wastes that our cells generate every day.
