I have gotten services to grind them out, also used a small backhoe,..but I have found a good and much cheaper way,... Burn them out. Put a good mound of charcoal over top of each stump. Light the charcoal, watch the fire for safety sake, etc Have lunch, do some yard work or polish the car (I found a good way to quickly polish a car also) Note it may burn for a long time so I don't wait all day,..I might put something around it (non burnable) so some fool doesn't step in it,..

Next morning if the stump needs another burn do it.

I used this technique on a bunch of white oak stumps that were cut about 3-4 inches above ground. The stumps were all at least 12 inches in diameter. None required more than 2 burns to get them below the ground

Charcoal is cheap. --96.236.xxx.xx

Drill holes in the stump and pour in diesel fuel. Cover the stump with plastic with bricks on top and let sit for 6 months. Stump will decompose into mush. I do this when the stump is too close to the house and burning would be too risky. --68.63.xxx.xxx

Charcoal is cheap and I like the way you think. Thanks for sharing the tip.

If I had several stumps one lot this would be a good deal. That said, I've got a buddy who would probably watch it for me and all I'd owe him is a case of cold suds and dibs on my favorite fishing hole for a weekend! ;-) --173.19.xx.xxx

In my town they limit open burning of brush, leaves, etc. In order to get around it, I always have a stick and a couple of hot dogs or marshmallows handy. They can't prevent you from having a cooking fire. --72.93.xxx.xxx

Yeah thats right,..you have a pile of charcoal and a few hot dogs on a stick,..and some marshmallows around,..(leave some out maybe in a clear container so your favorite animal won't be tempted to take it,.. I doubt the enforcers of a fire ban can or would bother you...They would have to ban hundreds of charcoal grills. No law that you have to use a grill.

A few years ago I had some logs to get rid of,.A year old so not green and too smoky,...did the same, made it a dual purpose thing,..I had one of those cages that you cook chicken in,..Left it out near the fire,.. (not planing to eat that chicken,.) It was in my backyard,.a cooler full of cans of sodas,...I saw a guy stop,..probably someone from the city,..he got as far as seeing the chicken "ready to barbecue",.and the cooler and.turned around a left,..

Actually I DID later do a few hot dogs over those coals,..your always welcome Charlie,..

That is Sturbridge Village country. Can't you still get burned for being a witch there?

Slow painful torture - The Massachusetts tax code. Ahh, but I digress.

Just West of there on 20 is a town called Palmer. I used to sit and eat two Jim Danny's at a Friendlies there.

I get a nice plant and put it in a pot and stand it on the stump. One from Hurricane Sandy was a nice black pine. It was pulled part way out of the ground. I planted a Barberry behind it to keep it from the view of neighbors. Barberry is red and covering it up pretty much. The berries are good food for birds and they can hide in it too because the stickers keep the hawks away. --73.33.xxx.xxx

My Uncle, who lived in a small town in mid Missouri use to cut his tree stumps into the shape of the letter "L" and it was a chair. So the stump with a back. Had them all over his yard, all different sizes. Way fun for a kid! I like all the methods shared. Having three trees down today and another next week! --66.87.xx.xx
