I have a property with 4 exterior lights with photocells. Every few years the photocells no longer work and the lights stay on during the day. I am getting tired of replacing the lights/photocells. Is there a brand that will last more than a few years? The current lights are made by RAB that I bought at an electrical supply store. They did no better that what is at Home Depot.

I dont understand. You say you try different light brands. But what photcells are you using.

Light fixture will make no difference if your problem is the photocell.

Maybe you are getting one with a built in photocell? That is never good idea. If so bypass the photcell and use a standard one.

Goggle a Intermatic K4121C

I usually get 5 to 10 years out of one. And had some last 15 years.

Can be added to just about any fixture. About $15 for a new one when needed. --73.177.xxx.xx

Motion lights are $30-$40. Just change it. If they are lasting 10 years, why not change them all?

I'm a big fan of changing light fixtures often. The trends change quick on those and it's an easy thing to do to modernize a room. --74.37.x.xxx

I mostly use the separate "stick" photo cells from HD. About $10. But they only work if you can wire it inline. They don't like the summer heat, we usually lose about one a year - especially the one on our outside storage yard which is in direct sun all day. This summer I finally gave up and just leave the four floodlights on 24 hours a day, it only costs about $2 a month with LEDs.

My apts have one that is about 20 years old and still works fine. I probably just jinxed it though... --47.216.xx.xxx

Then just get rid of that cheap generic one and use a brand name. Like Tork or Intermatic. They make ones that mount on the outside but also others that should fit inside.

About a 10 min job. --73.177.xxx.xx

Micah,

We only have a few so we installed lights that have LED "chips", not bulbs. We just leave them on because they use such littel power and it's cheaper than going back to replace them or run the risk of them not being on when needed.

Micah, I have a RAB unit experiencing the same problem. Let us know which one you used and how it works. I will see what I can find (Tork and/or Intermatic) and see how it works on my light fixture. --155.188.xxx.xx

Also a lot of people do like the fixtures with a non replaceable built in LED's.

I would have a regular fixture and can put in a replaceable LED bulb. Sure some LED's can last years, but also had some burn out in a couple years.

Easier to have a bulb. Just replace the bulb and can pick what wattage you want. --73.177.xxx.xx

Micah [OH], which did you choose, Tork or Intermatic? How did it work out for you?

I am ready to work on my RAB light fixture and was hoping to learn from your experience. --99.165.xx.xxx

I went to Lowe's and the only photcell that they had was a Tork. It cost 10.98 and it fixed the issue with my RAB light fixture. It now doesn't come on during the day, but only at night. We'll have to see how long it lasts. --99.165.xx.xxx
