Local gas company is requiring everyone with a natural gas meter in the basement to move it to the outside. They've hired a contractor to do all the work and the cost is included in the regular monthly bills. Am I crazy to be a little concerned about possible damage to my property? Of course I'll be there when they do it, but is there anything specific that I should be looking out for? Any comments welcome! --66.213.xx.xx

when they did ours, I wanted mine moved to the side of the house, rather than out front. they refused. I called, had supervisors show up, etc. Too bad ... it's their meter, their gas, their lines, they'll do what they want.

Advance about 3 years and all new gas lines are coming into the neighborhood. they need to check the connections to the houses. they knock on my door and ask if they can move the meter from the front to the side where it is much more practical for them and aesthetically nicer for me. Duh.

when they moved it the first time, they shoved some cement into the hole where the line went through the basement wall, slapped some cement on the cinder block inside and smoothed it out. --72.95.xx.xxx

I wouldn't worry. I had a house with CSST - flexible tubing that had a tendency to perforate with lightning strike and that lightning ignited the gas. Lots of documented fires from this product. This flexible gas pipe was throughout the whole house. I had it ripped out and replaced with the traditional, thicker, black hard pipe. It wasn't much of an issue. I'm assuming your basement meter is on an outside wall where the gas line runs in. If so, they'll probably just remove the meter, connect the input and output pipe and cut the pipe somewhere outside near the house to install the meter. As long as they check for leaks and do a pressure test, I wouldn't worry about it. However, if you have gas heat, I'd do it now before it gets cold. Also make sure the place where the gas line enters the house is sealed from the elements and critters.

The cost is in the monthly bill? That means you're paying for it? That stinks, especially since it's for their convenience. --108.69.xxx.xxx

If they are not charging you, I would say they can move the meter to wherever they want. If you are paying for move, you should have a say as to where they put it. Of course, it may cost extra to run extra pipe, from the front to the side of the house. If they refuse ask if you can hire your independent plumber to rout the line to the side of the house. --50.77.xxx.xxx

The meter being outside allows more accurate readings, fewer estimated monster bills, to be involved with gas utility plumbing you need to pass a D.O.T. gas class, get the class as soon as you can, it is a 7 year renewal. --76.188.xxx.xx
