Flea foggers (by Quackers [AR]) Posted on: Sep 20, 2017 6:47 AM

Good morning!

I have a SFH, hardwood/vinyl/tile floors, where the tenants scarpered out in the middle of the night, leaving a mess of crap. And fleas. During the cleanup I called my pest company to spray, but even after the cleanup, there are still a few fleas remaining. These appear to be young fleas, just coming out of the pupae stage.

I've been spraying baseboards and swiffering the floors, but just for grins, I put out some Hot Shot flea bombs yesterday (one per room, plus hall). The instructions say to let the fog stay in the house for at least two hours, but "longer is better."

So my question... I could go by the house at noon today and start airing it out, or let it wait until tomorrow morning. Is there really any advantage to waiting until tomorrow?

Thanks!

Fleas lay their eggs. The fogger does not kill the eggs. It may take a couple of times to get them all but you will. --70.109.xxx.xxx

My "rush" is to be able to get the house listed again. I need to replace a ceiling fan, then turn on my Zillow ad. It's a bad time of year for this specific location, but maybe I can find a good tenant before winter hits.

But on the other hand tenants don't like fleas either. Sigh.

Now if I can just find a way to kill the scorpions in the kitchen... --76.125.xx.xxx

Stick traps do not discriminate, fleas need 2 - 3 good long term soakings, like roaches they react to bleach by hiding deeper and dropping more eggs. --76.188.xxx.xx

I went and got some Nuvan ProStrips for fleas for my current turnover-- former tenants let a variety of stray cats come inside. I usually have good results with those in the first week or two-- the strips are good for about four months and release a vapor-- but I prefer to use them in empty houses that I can keep closed up.

Because I also mentioned there were fleas in the grass, and I wanted to at least give the yard a bit of a treatment around the house, my pest control people suggested NuGuard (1 oz : 1 gal) and Martin's Permethrin SFR (3 oz : 1 gal) for my pump sprayer. So I'll be doing that inside and out. --96.46.xxx.xx

Fleas are my least favorite pest after bed bugs!

My exterminator will do a flea treatment for $10 extra if we do a full pest treatment ($85 normally). Includes the knock down treatment that kills live ones, growth regulator (IGR) to sterilize any that survive or hatch out soon after the initial treatment, and includes the follow up spray that kills the second generation that will hatch in about 2-3 weeks.

For $95...I get guaranteed flea elimination for 3 months and NO RISK of fleas jumping on me and getting into my car and my home.

Knowing what I do now about DIY flea killing, I'd pay twice what they charge to have it done right. Make some calls. Hire this one done. --173.19.xx.xxx

Hey Quackers how ya been??

The foggers don't work as well as they used to (they used to kill the eggs).

I used boric acid along with the foggers. --75.132.xxx.xxx

Our last flea infestation took two full weeks to eradicate. Three professional treatments, MANYMANYMANY bombs, DE, etc. It was AWFUL and we could not work in the house during that whole two weeks.

I feel your pain. --173.22.xx.xx

Two full weeks, even if the pros do it, is the time frame. Why? Because today's killed flea's eggs hatch in about 14 days. I still shudder about the infestation in my dad's FL house after Mom died. My legs had dozens of bite marks, despite lots of vacuuming after each treatment. But getting a pro in twice (and adopting out Mom's cat because Dad could not care for it) solved the problem permanently. --71.175.xxx.xxx

I don't waste time on bug bombs and no longer waste money using an exterminator. Someone here recommended a web page called DoMyOwn. Lots of good information and supplies. I treat now at every turn over for regular ants, spiders and such and when when I encouter fleas I have what I need to address them quickly. Btw if you run a vacuum cleaner (even on hardwood floors) the vibration and heat will stir them up better. IGR is a beautiful thing. --71.213.xxx.xx
