How do you fix a cracked rafter? A home inspection on my sale says there are two cracked rafters and buyer wants them fixed.

I'm waiting for the inspection report and hope there are photos of these cracked rafters so I can see what the inspector is talking about.

At least it is very unlikely to be tenant damage. I've spent enough undoing tenant damage and "wear and tear" to get this house up to standard to sell.

Tenant apparently dropped the dryer vent through the floor and spent several years blowing dryer lint under the house. At least I know how to fix that. --72.35.xxx.xx

Jack it up as best as you can, rip three-quarter plywood, Coat each side with liquid nails and put the plywood on each side. Nail the snot out of it. Leave the Jack in place for a day or two until the nail glue sets up and remove it. That will work fine. --174.201.xx.xx

Oregon, cut two rafters out of the same material that's there now and put one, to the side of the one that's cracked if you have to use a jack to get both flush don't know how you'll accomplish that? If you get them flush, then spike them together. Don't know how they cracked, there shouldn't be any pressure on them to cause a crack. Report how you made out!..Charlie......... --174.199.xx.xxx

I agree with others, this is a simple fix.

Rafters are in the roof and often the only obstacles to sistering in a second one are the nails of the shingles. Cut those nails before forcing the next rafter into place.

floor joists are worse. There are bound to be wires in the way and plumbing.

Floor joists often crack around plumbing cut outs.

You can use thin flat metal to work around tight areas if you can't get a floor joist into position.

I lucked out once and bought a shack with a check. Never even went in the place. Turned out three or four floor joists were eaten by bugs. We tore off the band board on the front of the shack and slid about four or five floor joists in place.

The funny part is I never nailed them in. I didn't bother to attach them to the old floor joists being that I no longer needed the old ones to be there.

Don't forget to temporary reinforce under the bottom of your jack or distribute the load to more than one point. --174.200.x.xxx

I would say same as NE but nut, bolts and washers to encapsulate the parent wood. --76.188.xxx.xx

I think you take another piece of wood and attach it over the crack. It's called "sistering". Maybe two pieces and sandwich it in and bolt it or use big screws. --73.33.xxx.xxx

No big deal. Jack each one up, then sister them.

Any carpenter will know how to do this. 1/2 a day's work, at most (even counting the HD run for the sister planks).
