Hello All,

I have some cabinets that are in really good shape structurally but wanted to paint them.. Has anyone done this? or have another idea? Here are my questions if you did...

Did you sand them first?

What type of paint do prefer?

Did you poly after?

How did they hold up?

Look into PPG Breakthrough. My painter told me of it and I will be using it on my next cabinet paint job. One coat coverage, fast dry time, TOUGH, doesn't show roller marks. --72.172.xxx.xx

I have redone cabinets many times by Sanding and re staining , never painting. Merlon sanding pads ( the red ones) give it a super smooth finish . It's like a final hand sanding buff before you stain or paint. Next ones I'm going for the " white wash" look. --66.189.xx.xxx

Yes, my painted kitchen cabinets are in the photo section. We sanded lightly, used an awesome primer that my Benjamin Moore paint guy tinted to match our top coat. The top coat was an expensive cabinet paint guaranteed not to chip. It has held up well for 2 years with a good tenant. We also did repairs prior to painting with Rocky's Rock Hard Water Putty -- this stuff is fantastic! We added new satin chrome hardware and were very pleased with the result. Paint as much as possible with a small diameter foam roller to eliminate brush marks. --98.146.xxx.xx

Last house we repainted the kitchen cabinets and reused the hardware. It was a pain in the donkey and I swear I will never do it again no matter how much money I save. We had to sand the varnish off the pine cabinets and drawers and then multiple coats of semi-gloss white afterwards. Taking off all the hardware, soaking and scrubbing off years of kitchen grease and painting them black with spray cans. The cabinets have so many sides / edges it just plain sucked and took way too much of my valuable time - weeks and weeks.

My suggestion is rip them out and replace with new and be done with it in less than a day. If you are still trying to cheap out then get someone else do do the work. For me it was a matter of saving $1500 but wasting time. --71.50.xxx.xx

I have painted wood cabinets. It is best to take the doors and drawer fronts off to paint. First and foremost, clean and degrease well. Of course kitchens are greasy areas and paint does not adhere well to any type of grease. Then I lightly sanded. If you want a very smooth finish, you should fill the grain of oak type cabinets. If you still want the grain to show, skip that part.

Prime with a bonding primer that is made to adhere. I used a cabinet paint from Lowes, but I would not spend the extra money on that again. A good enamel in gloss or satin is fine. You can even add some floetrol to help it stay smoother. Let dry and cure for a few days before rehanging the doors. Mine has held up well for a few years now. --96.236.xx.xx

DEGREASE, DEGREASE, DEGREASE!!!

I did a kitchen in January. Degreased several times, used a deglosser from Sherwin Williams & then a newer paint from Behr that is an alkaloid. Really liked the finish. Took a couple coats to go over a darker walnut color stain. Really updated a dark dank kitchen from the 80s; new countertop, new backsplash & new hardware with stainless appliances & I was super super happy.

I don't go for perfection. Slow & steady wins the race & it's always a PITA to do. Most of the time they look so much better updated with a new color that I'm not that upset when I find a run here & there. --63.245.xxx.xxx

I have used 20 cans of Krylon Glossy White spray paint and it works great! Those 50 year old cabinets looked brand new! Make sure you use a fan, an industrial grade face mask and safety glasses. The fumes and clouds of spray dust can get pretty bad. --68.63.xxx.xxx

Rustolem sells a kit. We used it, it worked really well, but it is VERY time consuming. As with any paint job, the work is in the prep.

I would say it was 2 - 2 1/2 hours per cabinet. --75.132.xxx.xx

We remodeled a kitchen and I replaced the lower cabinets and counter top, but the uppers were perfectly fine. A light sanding and then Trim & Cabinet paint from Menards and they look brand new. I will do it again if the opportunity is there. Saved big money.

Be sure to mark/match door to cabinet as you remove before you paint (we number the doors where the hinges go) because it can be a bear to match the right door to the right cabinet later! --173.22.xx.xx
