Yes, other side of the mountain.

Its often been said that we landlords "need to stop thinking like landlords".

That being said,I'm here to tell you it is hard to go from the "buying and acquiring" side of life to the "I've got enough and I'm satisfied" side of life.

Hard to stop trying to get the most value for your buck and stop thinking of how BEST to wring the most value out of everything....

I wonder how those of you who have "made it" go from being frugal-minded to "the heck with it"-let's SPEND!

I'm finding it hard to change my ways! --76.189.xxx.xxx

Going from one of end of the spectrum to the other is not going to happen overnight. What you need to do is look at the thing (and only one) that you might want, new car, vacation, boat, remodel kitchen, even a dinner out. Then do it. You don't have to get the fanciest car, best kitchen or whatever, but allow your self to not pinch the pennies, or upgrade a bit on what you might normally do. That is a small step toward not being so frugal, but still satisfies your frugal thinking. Then it gets easier.

I still won't buy the drinks in a restaurant (way too expensive) but I will buy a higher priced entrée than I used to because I really do enjoy the meal. (and I still use a coupon if available). I have also found joy in buying things (usually on sale) for people that I know will like it. My daughter is just starting out, so buying the fancier baking pans is a treat for her, and I enjoy the appreciation she has for it.

Small steps.

Well Susan....if you have any ideas or words of wisdom, I'm open to suggestions.

But I do spend on myself. Somewhat anyway.

I did recently buy a new vehicle although it was completely unnecessary and not particularly smart financially, taking a loss on the trade of a perfectly good and practical vehicle. But the new vehicle is a truck and I always need a truck although I have access to my partner's when needed. I had to have it because I simply liked the color. Took me months to do it. I was going to wait but heard a rumor the color might be discontinued for 2018. My daughter and husband chided me on reminding me I should get it if I want it because I can't take it with me! It was very hard to do.

I do really like it but still have to struggle to keep those negative thoughts out of my mind as to whether it was smart or not.

Sure I could sell everything and never work again and still leave an inheritance to my kids. But that seems so wasteful. I guess deep down I must like being a landlord, solving problems, helping people and the security it brings. It's definitely not my nature to be extravagant. --173.170.xxx.xxx

It's not in my nature to "usually" be extravagant, although some would say I spend too much on my hobby of showing dogs!

Here's an example of my "thriftiness"-I decided NOT to enter a couple dogs shows that were last weekend (you need to enter a couple weeks ahead), and by not entering, I saved myself about $150, counting the price of entries, parking, and gas in the mix. Just didn't want to go.

Sunday, I was thinking to myself-"I'd like to get a pizza for dinner", my NEXT thought was "but I have a lot of food in the fridge that needs eaten;I better just eat that." My 3rd thought was-"you just saved yourself $150 by NOT entering the shows this weekend-GET THE PIZZA!"

So I did-but I used a coupon..., it's hard to let go of old habits. --76.189.xxx.xxx

Yes, it is. You're just fighting yourself constantly and having trouble justifying being impractical.

But you sound like you think like me. Eden though we both could well afford the pizza even without having saved on something elsewhere we have to lean on that other savings to justify doing something we want but know we don't need.

You are not alone. I can hear myself now.....I'd really like a pizza but should eat the leftover chicken from two days ago so it's not wasted....but I increased the rent on ABC St this month so that will cover the pizza. Never mind it was increased because taxes and insurance went up....this time it's justifying that pizza I want. --173.170.xxx.xxx

That's easy. You need a hobby. Say you have always enjoyed knitting -- and it is a frugal hobby because you can MAKE YOUR OWN CHRISTMAS GIFTS. Well to really be frugal, you need to raise your own wool, so that means buy a little farm for your "fiber flock". That entails $5K worth of fencing to protect your sheep. And then you need a spinning wheel ($1,400), a drum carder for processing your wool ($400), hay for the winter months, ($600) a fiber tumbler, and assorted wool processing tools and dyes.($500). Since you want to do a good job for your homemade gifts, you need to start attending fiber retreats held at spa resorts with other fiber enthusiasts, so you hone your craft. If you are really lucky, you will get a pair of socks knitted with your home grown yarn to give as a Christmas gift. See how much you saved? --98.145.xx.xxx

Susan, what kind of dogs do you have.We used to have three Samoyed's. Never showed them.Except in the neighborhood. And took them out walking.Always met a lot of people, were great for that.the dogs though they owned the neighbourhood, they did!Everyone misses them, they had a great life.Took a trip to Ireland away back.Stayed at a B and B.The people owned seven Greyhounds, and also had two litters. All the adult dogs were show WInners, Had Waterford Crystal Vases all over the place, also Silver ones, remarked how much the silver cups were, worth .were only a fraction of the Waterford? There are many pizza places here in New Haven,so it isn't a novelty. Getting a decent one is though. There is one down on Wooster Street, everyone raves about it,I wouldn't bother writing home about it.the one we go to is 100% better and no lines.Go figure? .........Charlie...... ..... . --174.199.xx.xxx

Worked in Scotland on a Hydro job,thousands of sheep there! ..Charlie....... ..... .... ... ... .. --174.199.xx.xxx

Charlie is right, a leopard can't change her spots. If you are stressing over a pizza, you'll never be able to free yourself of who you are to the core, which it's worth noting helped you probably arrive to financial freedom. Why not just put aside a little guilt free slush fund for yourself and manage it month to month or week to week? Maybe raise rents at renewal and whatever new revenue you create is your slush fund. Enjoy! --24.26.xx.xx

I hear you - we just booked a campground, and were muttering about the $5 per night upcharge for being from out of state. As if 10 nights of camping at $250 is a big deal when only one rental clears us four times that a month!

But when we had a last-minute opportunity last month to hear the Philadelphia orchestra play the score to a Harry Potter movie (while the movie was shown, no less), we didn't blink at reimbursing the people who couldn't use their $25 each tickets, and did not even begrudge the $20 for parking, or the money we spent on grabbing some food to take along. Not a huge splurge, but something that we would not have done even 5 years ago! --71.175.xxx.xx
