I have "given" away a house before because there were issues with city.

Talking with a fellow investor yesterday during lunch. He had a lead paint issue. He threw the keys and payment book on the health departments desk. Official's jaw dropped and magically found another way to solve issue. (Way easier and cheaper)

Anyone tried or have given a house back? Would love to hear other scenarios.

Seems to me that it wouldn't be as simple as tossing the keys and payment book on the guys desk.

Good for making a statement to the inspector for sure

Though. --174.201.x.xx

I once brought the deed and offered to sign it over for half the assessment, then for one quarter...

They got the message and re-assessed. Did not even require a site inspection. --98.122.x.xx

City officials don't get elected because of their ability and/or willingness to use common sense: they get elected so they can toe the line of the letter of the law, which some do better than others.

I ALMOST had 3 tax liens this year that fit this description of "Give aways". Long story short, my attorney and I wrangled with the City attorney on the phone for several hours regarding their liens on properties that were not worth half as much. Finally got them to see the light, but I was about ready to deed the properties to a transient in exchange for a bottle of hooch. (j/k) But it was getting silly...so I was getting silly ideas. --173.19.xx.xxx

My big city is trying to get a program going but it was recently discovered they were getting funding for years and used the funding for other city funventures, now during an election year the scrambling to make new names and charge rent increases to the tenants, I have been alerting tenants and managers citywide of the proposed folley and just a few days ago by accident found out the old funding story, I do know that in many places around OH, PA and NY the programs have failed to operate following the federal guidelines and evaporated. Since the Flint MI water hit the news I think places are trying to find a cash grab like they are trying to do here in CLE. --76.188.xxx.xx

Well, you have cities who think that all LLs are rich slumlords.

A few years back our city started requiring "free" rental registrations. A neighboring city started doing rental inspections every year. Of course, LLs have to pay for them. They are a nightmare, I've heard.

Our city now is trying to begin rental inspections as well. So, we've got a problem because our city is grasping for data to justify the need for these ridiculous inspections. The city is trying to hold us at a higher standard than homeowners. I get a warning for a BABY STROLLER being left out. Tenants go to the neighborhood stores and don't want to bring a dirty stroller inside their home. It is made for the weather, much like a bike would be.

If it keeps up, it will either be us suing the city or dumping ALL the keys. They keep cutting back our police force, so it's going to get worse before it gets better. Meanwhile, little action is taken for blighted homes whose owners don't care. So yes, I hear you and it's been a discussion for a few years now. --107.77.xx.xxx

Our County wrestles with the 24-bedroom "Single Family Homes" being built on eroding sand, they don't have the time or the inclination to deal with individual local landlords. --173.22.xx.xx

Lee,

Great story!

Have not given one away but did have the city tear down a house which I had bought the tax certificate and was waiting the mandatory redemption period.

They called me to tell me it was all down and cleaned up, then back peddled saying they did not know I had a lien on the house. (um so how did they know to call me??)

BRAD
