I have someone who works at Home Depot who's applying for a room. This guy has a checkered past but appears to be getting it together and has been at Home Depot for about a year. On the basis of his Home Depot employment, I decided to give him a shot. I come to find out today that Home Depot has housing assistance program designed to help associates who are homeless. They pay the SD plus the first month's rent. I never heard of this before, but I guess it makes sense from HD's perspective in that it keeps employee turnover down. It's a measure of what's going on in the economy today. My place happens to be fairly close to my local HD. BTW, HD is paying him $ 11 an hour which isn't quite enough to cover apartment rent in this area, but will work for a room.

HD will now get more of my business. a business decision on their part to minimize turnover but one also to help their workers. I did not know they do this. I am impressed. LL still need to ascertain whether 2nd mo will be paid though... --97.94.xxx.xxx |

I think that's great of Home Depot. I prefer I charity to come from individuals and businesses rather than Goverment. I already happily spend my money at HD, and will continue to do so. --75.141.xxx.xxx |

David, keep in mind they have to have a difficult return policy due to thieves. They used to, and may still do steal from one store, than go to another HD and return looking for cash. On the one occasion that I had paid cash and didn't have a receipt, I think they held back like 10 percent, totally understandable they are smtruing to stop the crime. When I use my card for purchases, I have no problem with returns. --75.141.xxx.xxx |

I appreciate HD's program to help. It certainly indicates the need in this economy. I realize some are homeless for legit reasons.
In my area it takes $16/hr x 40 hours to "survive", not thrive. If you work at HD you need a roommate or second job.
But YIKES!! Another reason I NEVER give out my home address!
The delivery guy could be homeless - not that all homeless are bad but do I really want him to know where I live?
I bought a skid of ceiling fans. The loader spotted my company name on the order and started crabbing to my Maint guy how we were mean, awful people because we had evicted him.
Scary to realize how close our business is joined to homeless. BRAD

I don't see HD as being particularly magnanimous here. For them this is merely a cost of doing business while minimizing disruption and turnover. I didn't query this guy, but frequently people like him are getting food stamps which effectively means that the taxpayer is subsidizing low wages. That means we'd get a tax cut merely by HD, Walmart and others paying more or least enough for them to not require taxpayer funded assistance. I didn't realize they paid associates so little. At $ 11 an hour, the only thing he can afford is a room in my area.
As it stands, HD may very well be a good source for tenants for the rooming house, so this means that I may approach someone there about referring me people. They apparently are having problems getting good people and this guy was a miscreant in his younger days (drug dealing and etc) and they are going through those who have reformed themselves looking for employees. His supervisor spoke very highly of this guy and I'm in this particular HD all of the time, so I'll probably run into the tenant there and his supervisor. The tenant has about a 10 block walk from my place to his job and if he doesn't want to walk, there's a bus stop right outside, so HD housing people with me wouldn't be a bad thing for them or for me. I'll need to look into this given this information. --207.172.xx.xxx |

The Homer fund helps employees with different types of urgent need - like giant medical bills, etc also. Employees contribute to it to help one another. Kind of a nice concept I think. --68.105.xxx.xxx |

I read this as a employee sponsored housing assistance, lets hope it works better than the guv programs and really gives them a boost off the streets. --76.188.xxx.xx |

So I read up on this. The program is for existing employees to help in a time of crisis. This is not to bring homeless people in as employees. Some funds come from employees but much of the money comes from Home Depot.
Hat tip to Home Depot for establishing and funding a program.
