COSTA MESA, Calif. (AP) – Fire officials say residents of an Orange County apartment that was gutted by fire were burning candles to ward off evil spirits before the blaze broke out.
Officials tell the Los Angeles Times that people were burning candles and sage before flames erupted Tuesday night in a Costa Mesa duplex.
The fire was mostly contained to a bedroom and was quickly doused.
Some residents were displaced but nobody was injured.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation but fire officials say people burning candles or using open flames should keep a careful eye on them. --73.195.xxx.xxx |

Guess it really didn't keep away the evil spirits. They started the bedroom on fire anyway. --96.236.xx.xx |

Yeah, burning a bundle of sage and waving it around the house supposedly drives annoying spirits away. But it also flips sparks and embers all over. I have never done it even though I had a bad spirit in one of the rental houses I lived in. I sold it and moved. I have one in another house that I have seen and heard speak to me but it's a woman and she sounds pleasant.
I rented the second floor of that one today and told the applicants about her. They are related to one of my good tenants and they need a cosigner so tenant will do that. Young folks just starting out. They will be moving in on September 1 as soon as the psycho downstairs moves out. --73.33.xxx.xxx |

Ally, you have ghosts in your apartments that speak to you and you tell your prospective tenants about them? --50.32.xxx.xx |

NE PA: yes I tell prospective tenants because I don't want them to panic if they see something. I had an applicant call once and ask me if there were any ghosts in the building and I said yes, and she said thank you and hung up.
There are centipedes also that come up to the first floor occasionally and I tell tenants about that.
The applicants I told yesterday are the granddaughter of a long term tenant and her fiancé. They gave me a deposit yesterday. Their grandfather died several years ago and their grandmother can see her husband in his favorite chair so they are well acquainted with friendly spirits.
They really are all over the place. I only see them occasionally but I do see more dog spirits than human spirits.
Aren't you glad you asked? --73.33.xxx.xxx |

I don't know Ally, I find that to be very odd. I think when a person is renting out apartments, they need to be neutral. Spiritually, politically, emotionally neutral. I know you think you can see ghosts and stuff, but I don't know how that can be carried over to your business or why it should be for that matter. --174.201.xx.xx |

NE PA. This is kind of a special circumstance. I can see these beings so I feel obligated to tell someone if there is one present. I have three female tenants who can also do this.
An example for you would be telling a tenant about some physical issue to the building such as not using the fireplace since it smokes. I can't think of anything else really because most issues with buildings can be fixed. The ghost issue can't be fixed. --73.33.xxx.xxx |

It's a hilarious situation. AllyM mentions her "psycho" tenants all the time -- and then goes on to explain that she's seen ghosts in her units and they speak with her, so she warns her new tenants about them.
Um, yeah, it's the tenants that are all psycho... ;)

Everyone knows my niche is pet owners. In one of my rentals many years ago, my tenant reported an "almost" break-in. Seems a guy was jimmying the kit door. But some loud barking both woke the family AND scared the robber. Funny thing tho was THESE tenants didn't have a dog--they only had cats. But the former tenant of 3 years had a big dog that died in the rental. Although he as very sweet and never bit anyone, he did bark when someone made key noises at the door before entry (then happily greeted everyone that entered)! I think he is still protecting that place, because again with later tenants I had a report of a big barking noise when someone tried to enter. It wasn't THEIR dogs because they were little yappers. So now if/when I have turnover and rent to new tenants, I tell them the story and let them make their own conclusions. So far, no more invisible barking, so maybe that dog spirit has moved on. --108.87.xx.xxx |

Lynda, that is so true of dog spirits. They love their homes and stay there. His people are probably there too in spirit as they love their homes.
Tonight I heard my Pepe bark even though he passed in April from liver cancer. My other two dogs were standing there but neither one of them did it.
Gotta love dogs. I wish I understood the physics of how spirits do what they do. --73.33.xxx.xxx |
