I have roaches for the first time in an apartment of a lady I just evicted. The unit is empty now, what should I do to get rid of these things? I'm looking for DIY stuff, not $4000 for a exterminator.

Go to domyown.com
There they will have recommended pesticides by pest.
I have had good luck with Invict Gold gel bait, D-Fense pesticide, delta dust, and the Gentrol IGR modules. All used together. I have wiped out some pretty nasty infestations with that. --166.137.xxx.xxx |

First eliminate the elements for survival which are food, water along with warm place to live. Eliminate the homes by chalking all the cracks in the baseboards, kitchen cupboards and where ever cracks in the rental unit. Install insulation foam where pipes or wires enter floor or walls. Thoroughly clean behind the fridge, stove along taking out the garbage immediately. Put bleach in the defrost pan of the refrigerator along with fixing any leaky faucets along draining out all the water sources. Next buy some sticky traps then place around perimeter of the rooms along with buy some Max Force or Combat gel. Remember roaches never travel in the centre of the room but around walls. During the winter putting anything outside the live roaches will make a run for it. Once the elements are eliminated then gel becomes effective where over a period of a few weeks the population goes down. Sticky traps will catch some of the roaches right away as they can not escape. Monitor the sticky traps then replace the sticky traps. Start the process right away as the roach will continue to expand. The elements are important for anything to survive. Once a roach eats the gel it dies then up to 45 roaches will feed off the dead roach. --192.81.xx.xx |

domyownpestcontrol.com ships very promptly.
Get yourself a pack of Advion Roach Bait Gel... maybe two packs, depending on how awful it is. There should be four syringes per pack. Deploy the first syringe; go back two or three days later and see what's been eaten. Continue applying as necessary, but leave the bodies in place, so that the roaches cannibalize each other, and further spread the poison from eating the carcasses of the dead poisoned ones.
I also picked up some Pivot and some Optimate at my local pest control store. It's a strong chemical that you dilute into water, and then apply with a pump sprayer.
If you have a really, really bad infestation, you also might pick up some Gentrol Point Source. It affects their hormones, and makes them unable to breed. You can tell if it's working in that their wings get curled at the tips. That's more long-term-game.
The Advion should take care of 99% of stuff by itself, and should completely clear out all but the worst infestations single-handedly. The Optimate and Pivot are insurance. The Gentrol is used in a worst-case scenario. --96.46.xxx.xx |

A qualified exterminator should NOT cost $4000. Holy cow!
My local, reputable company charges $90 for a "cocktail" that does roaches, spiders, ants, silver fish, and several other bugs. Add $10 if there are fleas. 90 day warranty with free retreatment. I can't justify DIY at those prices and having a professional's work to back up anything that goes to court.
Make some calls. We make money when we take the (chemicals) out of the truck. --173.19.xx.xxx |

Lots of great advice about using the gel. Just remember that roaches like warm places which means outlets and electronics(thermostats and stoves). I typically remove all of the light switch/ outlet covers and squirt a toothpaste size blob in every box. I do this as a matter of habit between every tenant. I also use a generous amount of borax sprinkled along baseboards. I don't remember the birth cycle of a roach (it may be worth researching), but getting rid of them takes a while.
Best of luck. --74.124.xxx.xxx |

Roaches are critters that seek heat, they live the life of a rockstar tanning as much as possible until - bleach enters the scene, then they go deep into walls and high up to keep dropping eggs like speedwalking, so for this reason you flood trim strips with the suspend-c liquid and after that has gassed off 20-30 minutes come with the gelbait and put a drop on top of all the doors and window trims - this is where they make the scenic lookout so they will nibble that death snack and head back to the nest get sick and croak - they get eaten by slightly distant family members and the cycle repeats about 3 times so you have to rebait after 7-10 days and only after the liquid has been sitting 30 minutes - the gas decomposes the poison in the gel, re gel again in 6-8 days after 4-6 gel treatments you should be about done, but it takes awhile to get the hatchlings before they drop eggs and the timing is very important. --76.188.xxx.xx |

agree that it's getting those egg sacks, not just the critters. I know of no exterminator that guarantees anything being wiped out, especially with just one treatment. the guarantee is that they'll come back. --72.95.xx.x |

I use their orthene WP, gentrol, and the odor reducing agent (forget the name) you can buy as a package.
Treat more than once. Read their info on critters, they are thorough. Best website I have found for info and professional grade critter killers. --74.222.xxx.xxx |

I'm a DIY type of guy. But not for anything that requires putting chemicals into a place where people are living. I don't want the liability.
In the south, pest treatment places are a dime a dozen. I had a problem at one house, which I'm pretty sure was caused by tenants way of living. Anyway, next tenant complained so I set up a service which costs $99/quarter. They do one scheduled treatment per quarter but UNLIMITED visits for any other complaint. I give tenant the business card and tell them to call anytime they see a bug. For the price point for this rental it made sense, realize it might not for C or lesser properties. --24.98.xxx.xx |

Pick up some gel baits and apply them under the sink and in corners. You will know if you are getting them as the dead bodies will just stay on the floor until its cousin takes it back to its nest to eat it.....and that will kill him/her too.
So don't be too quick to sweep up the dead bodies. Then again do step on them either as they are crunchy --24.239.xx.xxx |

Ditto what Sid wrote. NE, you are often trying to offload chores that are a drain of your time. Build a good relationship with an exterminator, and dealing with bugs is as simple as a call or text. I seldom pay $100. --72.172.xxx.xx |

Got rid of a sec. 8 tenant who had infested a house with a sever roach problem. Followed the instructions given on this board, purchased Advion roach killer the traps and gel. I am roach free took minutes and time.
I had an exterminator $85 a visit and they returned after a week weeks. Exterminator said monthly visits was the solution. --108.28.xxx.xx |
