I had to paint a 4 bedroom townhouse where the evil, old resident had chain smoked for over 10 years. The former white walls looked like strong brewed coffee. The unit had a mix of popcorn ceilings, textured ceilings and fake wood paneling so the usual TSP wash would not work. A local landlord with many houses suggested Sherwin Williams oil based Pro Block primer, no surface prep, just slap it on then paint. I did scrub the filthy paneling with dollar store sudsy ammonia and a sponge mop. I just rolled the primer on with no cleaning, no surface prep aside from brooming away ceiling cobwebs. I had to thin the primer with a little mineral spirits as it is very thick. I topcoated with cheap, 35 dollar per 5 gallon Lowes flat white. The completed job looks like a pro painter did it! No bleed through at all. This stuff is much easier to work with than shellac based primer and covers better than Kilz oil. You MUST wear a good respirator as the solvent smell is very bad. I expected this to be a horrible job, but this primer made it easy. FYI

Charlie - Thanks for your reply. Does Gripper cover heavy nicotine? The gripper I have seen is water based, which normally does not cover nicotine. It would be great to paint without a respirator if gripper works as well. --157.204.x.x |

Del,yeah! Gripper is water based, everything I use is water based, np fumes and easier to apply.I suppose it does mix with the nicotine, but what the heck, will just be a different colour ..........Charlie.................nicotine flamingo................................. --174.199.x.xxx |

Pro-blok is the exterior primer and is thicker than the prep-rite interior version, I use SW when needed but often resort to mistint colors. --76.188.xxx.xx |

I recently did same paint job on a 20+ smokers' apt.. 2 coats on the wall regular latex paint.. Kilz oil based for the ceiling.. worked just as well.. (SW is little bit pricy )
The yellow vinyl window turns right back into white when my ex-drug-dealer day worker wiped it off with a wet rag.. --73.16.xxx.xxx |
