My SO bought a house that came with an extra lot that runs perpendicular to the house.

He doesn't want to keep it, it's costing $900/year to mow it an keep the City off of us.

I've contacted the homeowners on both sides to see if they want to buy it (cheaply, AND with super cheap monthly payments until paid off.) No bites.

I contacted a couple of local builders, ONE called me back an frankly said there would be no money in building there as the neighborhood wouldn't support a new home. (older 1930s B homes, but very neat and well kept neighborhood).

So then we approached Habitat, to GIVE them to build on. It took them 5 months to finally tell us no thanks.

OK my genius board of directors, now what?

I was thinking to list it for sale for low payments and sell it that way, but of course we'd have to figure out how to foreclose if they bailed on payments. --75.132.xxx.xx

Put a tiny home on it and rent it to someone who can mow it?

Small modular home (not manufactured double wide), basic vinyl floor, laminate counters, but all new. You be the builder. Sell it at a profit, but as a starter home. Lower price starter homes are very hard to find in my area and a new one, impossible to find. If it doesn't sell, then rent to cover the expenses. --96.236.xx.xx

Ken, yes that is what I am saying.

Linda, we thought about that. I doubt the city will allow a modular.

Here is the problem.

The lot is on a city street, with all amenities available. From the street, there is about 12 feet of level land, then it slopes down. All the homes around slope down to the same spot (think like a bowl with houses around the edge) the bottom of the bowl is everyone's back yards. It's not a drastic drop off by any means (easily mowed), and the "bowl" becomes quite level. The issue Habitat had, is it would take a lot of infill (in their opinion) to build and that is more than they want to take on. I would think we would have to do the same. --75.132.xxx.xx

The Community Garden sounds a good idea! Divide it up into small plots, and lease those for a nominal fee to cover taxes. No more mowing! Although you might have to provide water somehow.

People are into growing their own food these days. Maybe you could even do a community chicken coop LOL! --173.22.xx.xx

I guess you could offer the town drunk a bottle of Southern Comfort to record a Deed naming him the owner?

J/k, but I hear there are creative ways to get rid of property. You've tried most of the ones I would have suggested.

Residential lot, I assume? Could you change the zoning and use it for something else? In my town, just having a zoning hearing means all the neighbors will get invited, and maybe if they sense you are trying to "mess with" the neighborhood they will get more interested in buying it than they are today.

Offer it to a local college/university to use for some class activity?

Find out what you can/can't put on it...maybe storage units? Mobile home? Urban "camp site?"

Allow the neighbors to park their boat(s), kids cars, RVs, trailers on it for a nominal fee plus take turns 1x per month mowing, then if the city gripes you'll have them on your side to get a usage variance. But who will gripe to the city if they're getting a $15 / month parking spot that keeps their driveway from cluttering up?

Local church/club (Kiwanis, Rotary, Lions, Lodges) want to use it for outdoor parties/picnics?

I dunno. Gotta get creative. --173.19.xx.xxx

Get the parcel legally separated from the house first, than see if the city wants it.

If the city won't take it, transfer the property to a burner LLC and stop paying taxes and taking care of it. The city will lien it than foreclose on it. Problem solved. --24.45.xxx.xx

It IS 2 legally separated parcels.

This is a somewhat small town. My SO bought from an estate. The Admin of the estate is someone I knew years ago. She is also very involved in local voluteer groups (well known/connected). Because of this the City "knows" who owns the property, if you know what I mean. Shenanigans on ownership would not really get us anywhere.

Also, no way there could be a Community "anything": they wouldn't allow it and no parking except street.

Can't move a house there without infill first. Def no mobiles, (zoning),

The town drunk is looking better, SID!

I like the idea of selling or trading super cheap and then let the "new owner" deal with the city, even if they don't pay and we don't 'foreclose".

Blue, a modular is not a mobile home. It is a stick built home, built in two or more sections in the factory. It is built with 2 bys, real shealthing (ply or osb) sheetrock etc. they truck the 2 halves (or more) to the site and crane it on the foundation. Very sturdy houses, once bolted together you would never guess they were not stick built. Cost efficient. So you build a basic house, not fancy, sell for a profit.

How about a lottery sale, or write a reason why you want it, $100 per entry. Donate it to church or land conservancy. Either could hold or sell. --96.236.xx.xx

Is this in MO or IL?

I believe that if in MO, you can kill the grass, plant native flowers, and the town can't do anything. Not positive, though.

A modular home is legal everywhere. It is built in a factory the assembled on site. If you come up with the cash to build it, you should be able to sell it. --64.251.xxx.xxx
