Hello. I am looking at a piece of land in Central Florida that is about 20 acres and is dry, been dry for at least 75 years but I have been told there is a lot of peat in this chunk of land.

So has anyone had experience with buying land with a lot of peat? Not sure how much but go the insinuation that the entire 20 acres has peat on it.

Is it possible to build houses on land with peat using piles, or excavate and bring sand in? Lots sell for over $100,000 so would have to see if the cost is worth it.

Has anyone had any experience with mining and selling peat? is that something that could be profitable? --205.156.xxx.xxx

As part of your due diligence dig some test holes and see what you see.

I have done a number of beach houses where their is no bottom. Typically you can dig down to something solid and put in stone. Than do a spread footing.

If your doing a subdivision my biggest concern would be drainage. The houses are no big deal, its the infrastructure that can be costly. --24.45.xxx.xx
