I would like to get some feed back with regard to the paint color for a bath room. The bath itself is not large and gets some light through the window.

What's the new trend now?

Also what finish like semigloss, gloss, etc

Thanks.

Just read a recent study that said BLUE bathrooms raise the selling price of a house by a LOT. FWIW.

Semi-gloss in a bathroom. --173.22.xx.xx

No, it was on Zillow. Zillow gets a lot of things wrong but this sounded right to me.

Semigloss unless the walls are in bad shape then go to Satin. The shine shows every flaw in the sheetrock. I like blue myself, grey is good, a lot depends on how dark the vanity and floor is, how much light you get in. I would say a smaller bath with not much light should have a lighter color in it. Keep it fairly neutral and towels, mats, soap dishes can all be a favorite or bright color.

W,

Interesting article. Interesting form of research. Good to consider. I agree those photos look great.

For a beach, Florida, or desert town, yes.

It's easy to spot the folks who paint their Indiana home like their Florida home. Really stands out. In Indiana Repose Grey is still hot.

We used a few of those colors on a flip and it turned (Indiana) people away.

Just had a meeting with the Conco paint rep (Menards' private label) had he pointed to his (Repose) grey shirt and said THIS is our top selling color. Customers are painting OVER colorful walls with grey.

This is what I do not like about Zillow: They almost make up data leading folks to false conclusions. I understand their research and math but they left off important factors such as new const vs existing homes, areas of the country, price level, staged vs vacant...The new const home, staged and colorized by a pro, with new appliances, and in house financing - yes, will sell for more.

The headline telling me I can get $5440 more for my house if I paint the bathroom blue is poor journalism.

I read thru many of the comments opposing this article.

My prospects tell me they like the neutral grey.

Sorry, re-reading my post - sounds like a downer. Not intended, just reacting:)

Keep up the interesting info! THIS is how we learn and how we grow. This article made me stop and analyze MY situation. That is a good thing.

And I ALWAYS like to look at pretty house pictures!

Some realtors taught me a new phrase related to your comment: "yeah but it's Zillow".

I read a different article and it said the same thing. Could be an average.

Another recent article said a yellow kitchen sells. In the other article I read about having a blue bathroom, it said yellow kitchen, pink bedroom, a red(dish) dining room, blue living room decrease selling potential. Another said stay away from brown and terracotta. So, I guess it's just good to look at other homes on the market closeby and see what they've used in their bathrooms.

Maybe buyers like neutral so they can personalize it with anything they already own and paint it in their own time. --107.77.xx.xx

I would go semi gloss or satin for the sheen. Color wise-I do not like white(although it looks clean when FIRST done).Light gray-just a hint of color makes a world of difference. --75.75.xxx.xxx

Brad, I so agree about "but it's Zillow!" but hey you use what data you can!

We paint our houses Universal Grey now, and it is universally better accepted than our old off-white LOL! We took your advise but use a cheaper paint.

Personally I like soft aqua bathrooms and bedrooms too, so I will accept data that supports my own feelings...don't we all? :) --173.22.xx.xx

Blue would probably work well, as long as it is a LIGHT shade. I would keep any color in a house a light shade, since a little goes a long way without being overpowering. --68.105.xxx.xxx

I would paint it white. It looks more spacious and ready for their decorating ideas. I do like model homes and they are all pre decorated but when they sell them, the actual homes are not decorated and all the walls are white. If the million dollar expert builders do that, why should you paint in colors? The effects of color on people are subtle. White is just white. --73.33.xxx.xxx

Ally, we are not selling, we are RENTING and tenants are NOT allowed to paint.

Gray (which I love) is the new beige (which I always hated). Gray has also been *in* for about 10 years now, and we will soon see a shift away from gray from people sick of it. What it will change to--no knows at this time. However you can change the whole look of gray by adding a few drops of green to make a light green/gray--like *fern gray* or a few drops of blue to make a pale blue/gray--like a pale federal blue. In fact, you can add a few drops of red to a med gray and have a mauve or a dusty rose.

Anon, for a sm bathroom go with the pale gray if you have a dark floor or vanity. If all fixtures are white use a med gray.

Robin, for a bathroom with blue fixtures, paint it white, put on a wt counter-top and a small bowel of blue flowers. Applicants will tend to see the blue less as detriments, if everything else (walls, floor, tub surround) is white. If you want to put some money into it, sink and toilet are cheap to change--them arrange for the tub to have a white COVER put on top of it. I forget the name for that but it sure beats the cost of pulling out a tub and all the surround in a total re-do. --108.87.xx.xxx

The higher the gloss the more reflective the paint, the room will look smaller.......yet you need some reflectivity in the paint as it allows it to be cleaned - and you want a clean bathroom. You might want to do eggshell finsh --24.239.xx.xxx

they can have any color they want as long as they want antique white or swiss coffee. standardized paints are the way to go and you're more likely to already have that in a can if you need a little room done. saves a trip and time and

semi for the sills and trim, eggshell or the next down for the walls. painted cabs get semi too. while we're at it...all window sills get semi-gloss. cleans up well --76.176.xxx.xxx
