Tenant Followed me on FB

Facebook has been suggesting friends based on your contact list on your phone. I've been getting prompts to make certain people friends including tenants but I've never pursued. I use FB a lot, but I generally don't make public posts and have not approved this person as a friend. Can you drop a follower like you can unfriend someone? I'm thinking he can't see a thing I post and this tenant is a decent tenant, but I still like "degrees of separation".

FB is almost (diabolical?) in the way they find connections under the surface. Could be as simple as he looked up your website or sent you an email or wrote a check to your company which tied the check to you. Or you each googled the same thing.

Brad, I really think it's my contact list on my phone. All of my tenants are grouped by property and I've been noticing some of them appearing under people you may know. No Facebook for me either. Well, there is a login that I have under another name, another email, with no friends, no followers, no information and absolutely no connection with my phone. That login will allow me some access to check out new and current tenants on a limited basis.

My privacy is important, my friends that might be interested in what I do will get an email from me and I from them. My immediate family, including 20 something daughter shut their accounts as well as a number of friends. Facebook is just too creepy. --108.44.xx.xx

Last week my wife was showing me FB posts of our neighbor and his new girlfriend. I gave her the

phone back and told her I wasn't comfortable looking at their personal pictures. She asked me why, because it was open to the public.

I told her I didn't care and I felt like a stalker. She said its called creeping.

Facebook actually has a TERM FOR IT!

You're Facebook creeping when you're checking out other people's pages and not posting anything.

Now if it's an incoming tenant, all bets are off.

I'm like LindaJ. I have a yahoo address with nothing connected to it except my facebook page. I believe when I set it up I was 99 years old ... completely made up name. Nothing at all where they want to know what movies I like, where I went to school, where I grew up, etc.

I have zero desire to deal with facebook but for things like the newspaper online, you need to sign in through them. also, sometimes companies don't have web sites any more but you need to check out their facebook page.

all that said, I don't access the internet nor e-mail via my telephone. I use the phone to make phone calls ... that's it. --72.95.xx.xx

Simply set your FB privacy settings properly (so that only Friends can see you), and you should be fine. Someone following you when you have things set properly would just mean that they can't see anything.

There is an option on your profile to view your profile as other people -- such as friends and non-friends. Use that to view your profile as a non-friend and see what you can see. That is what they can see.

I find it very useful for making political comments to get things off my chest when the media lies about things. I have it set so only my six real human friends can see it and no one else. When I annoy someone with my politics they ask to

"friend" me and I simply remove the requests. If I don't "friend" them, they can't shout at me on my FB page. Re your creepy requests GKARL, they get them out of emails and when we signed up for FB we somehow let them search part of our computer for information without us knowing it. I just saw a friend request from my electrician that I have not called in months since his guy put a hole in a ceiling installing something. I'm sure he didn't reach out so I don't know how he got on my list of people who want to be friends. I just deleted him. Have tried a suggestion here to check people out on Facebook before renting to them. I have started doing that using their phone number before I return first call. Last apartment I rented, lady came to showing, when she returned app she told me she thought it very strange but I had shown up as a possible friend on her Facebook feed. My brother-in-law cheated on his wife of 30 years and asked for a divorce so he could be with the woman he cheated with. Facebook recently offered me this woman as a potential "friend." Her profile shows her all dressed up for her wedding to my creep of an ex-BIL. Facebook thought I'd go for this because my sister's two daughters are "friends" with this woman, I guess.

GKarl I used to have that happen when I went on Facebook from my cell phone. I stopped going on Facebook from my cell and the recommendations stopped. The same contacts are on my computer and IPad as well but Facebook does not recommend tenants as friends when I use those devices. I wonder if it somehow is connected to texting or calling vs just being stored in my contact folder. --24.61.xxx.xx

Doris: yep because you searched for her or checked her page that's why she showed up as a friend suggestion. I love Facebook, I only advertise my rentals with it and check all the people's pages that apply. My profile is private and only few pictures and info can be seen without being my friend. It most likely looked at your contact list and linked it with their profile based on the phone number.

Definitely go into the privacy settings and double check everything. Check every time a new EUA pops up when you log in too. FB has been known to sneak it changes that can expose the info you have.

Love it or hate it FaceBook is here to stay for a long time along with many other social media platforms and anyone that has a business should utilize them in some way or another even if you don't use them personally.

Oh yeah, and never post ANYTHING on FB, even only to friends, that you wouldn't be ok with it being displayed on the nightly news. --74.130.xxx.xxx
