I'm considering changing to push button locks. I have had a push button Schlage on my home for the past year, and have not needed to change the battery yet. A dead battery seems to be the only down side.

Anybody using push button locks on their rentals? What are the pros and cons using push button on rentals? --98.245.xxx.xx

I had a Schlage push button lock on my personal residence when my special needs son was at home. We had different care givers in and out all the time, and texting a code was much easier than passing out keys. Biggest problem was remembering where I put the dang instructions when it was time to change a code!

I have had the Schalge locks on my apartment's laundry rooms for 4 years now. Had to change the batteries once. Biggest problem is that the tenants do not bother to lock the laundry room doors. --98.145.xx.xxx

Before I took over after my dad passed, mom and dad had some of those that can have the code changed when someone leaves. The problem was that tenants gave the number out to friends who then were not friends and they would ask mom and dad to change the code. This happened so often that they went back to the old key locks. Tenant is less likely to give out a key than four numbers. Waste of time and the battery will go dead at midnight on the coldest night of the year. --73.33.xxx.xxx

We have used these on common doors as well as our personal residence & office & the only issue has been an occasional dead battery. We hang a combination lock box on the door frame that most people don't even notice with a key to the lock in the event the battery dies. Tenant can still get in if the battery dies at an inopportune time......and it's never an opportune time.

We used ResortLocks for our vacation condo. It generated a random code for every guest that stayed. Worked off WiFi signal. Again, hung the lock box for emergencies. Worked like a charm. --104.128.xx.xx

We have them on all rentals. Use all 10 year batteries now at every turnover. No problems so far. We change all the master codes to match so you never need instructions to change the user codes. --66.189.xx.xxx

Are the batteries standard batteries like 9 volt or Triple A?

My only concern based on the responses is battery life. But if there are batteries available that last 10 years I'm sold.

I have Schlage locks. They use a 9 volt battery. The ones I installed 2 years ago are still on the original battery. I would only use them in a covered area though. I installed one on a side door to a garage with no overhang. The lock will get moisture in it and freeze. I have not run into this issue with the locks behind screen doors. Aside from the freezing lock I really like them. There are great for exterior doors for the 3 families I have since it is easy to delete and add codes when tenants come and go. --173.88.xxx.xxx

I have the Schlage deadbolt locks and they're way better than the Kwikset locks. Since you're manually operating the locking mechanism, the batteries will last longer. As a preemptive measure, I plan on swapping out batteries periodically to avoid lockouts --172.58.xxx.xxx

I have one on my shop. I like it, but a couple of things I don't like:

If you don't change the code, the numbers will wear off the digits you use and make it obvious that THOSE are the keys. They still need the correct order, but it narrows the possibilities to only 1000.

The batteries do indeed die at inopportune times.

On mine, you pull the cover off the backside with no tools to change the code, and there are two codes. This gives ANYONE access to setting their own code. Scary. --74.222.xxx.xx

I have been using them for well more than a decade. Battery last well more than a year and that is with normal use. I change the battery at the same time as the smoke detectors. I never had a problem. I always praised these locks. In the early days I always got shot down in favor of the traditional lock and key. Look now... I told you so..

I am also looking at locks. If it's the Schlage then see how easy it is to open.... www.youtube.com/watch?v=X038GMKwHNw

Still want Schlage?

I'm thinking about lockstate wifi enabled locks. Can lock and unlock over internet and setup temp key codes that expire after one use, etc. Made with Airbnb in mind. You might be able to go keyless with your tenants and still have control over your lock remotely. --99.125.xxx.xxx
