Received two notices of class action lawsuit against York, Fraser-Johnston, Luxaire,, Coleman, Evcon, Guardian, Champion, or Dayton brand residential or light commercial HVAC units, air conditioning or heat pump systems.

OK, I have a mini split in my home and two AC systems in my big duplex. Just got them year before last. So I call the AC guy and he says that the coils are getting pin hole leaks due to a combination of the type of coolant used these days and the condensation on the coils. He said they replaced 26 coils last year on various brands. He says that if they find a leak they top it up. It lasts for the season and they then replace the coil with aluminum or coated coil He says that there are only four copper coil makers in the country and all are having issues.

The legal paperwork says that the case has not been decided by a judge but York has agreed to just fix whatever breaks and give rebates as the problems occur.

Just want to let you know and ask if this sounds right to you HVAC experienced folks.

Sounds like another miserable problem caused by the EPA using too stringent rules for what to use in AC and other units. Sort of like losing the incandescent bulbs and having to use the crappy screw bulbs. The cost is on us the taxpayer and the EPA folks get the feel good from helping the environment.

What is common with most products it is in the customers home where the customer is testing the product then retrofits are being done. The new parts are done by different vendor supplier to the company. There should be a extended warranty to cover those type of problems. Remember when I bought the new lithium ion cordless drills where went back to company for service. Found they have changed the part number on the chargers which means there were problems with the chargers. The company supplied new batteries and chargers. Companies try to get the product out there before the competition. --65.95.xx.xx

Every HVAC manufacturer has had problems with leaking evaporator coils. This is due to the new 410a refrigerant required by the EPA. It runs at higher pressures and apparently is more corrosive than the good old R22.

Most will give you a free coil under warranty... but then you get to pay for the not free installation...around $750 typically.

When my 2009 Lennox coil leaked, I got another one for free...just like the first one. The second one will NOT be replaced under warranty since it was 5 year. --74.222.xxx.xxx

Thank you Gevans. I see why the folks needed the Class Action Law Suit. It's the 750 install fee. I will get on this with my buddy in DC about the 410a coolant and the EPA. --73.33.xxx.xxx

Thanks for sharing, haven't had any new installs in a few years. Hope it all works out for you. Really all i'd want is to have gotten what I paid for. --184.206.xxx.xxx

Has there ever been a class action suit which resulted in any monies for the people? More than say $30 bucks.

Seems like the lawyers make out well. I have a friend who refuses to ever get involved. Speaks directly with the company and deals with them. --74.96.xxx.xxx

I have not had these problems but I am part timer, about 15 years ago I took a pile of -bad coils- from a midstream supplier but they held 800PSI for a week and have been in service mostly 10 years now so I think it needs more research before I join the wagon train. --76.188.xxx.xx

We can thank the EPA for this problem, along with Dupont who holds the now expired patents on the old faithful refrigerants, and not so coincidentally the not expired patents on their replacements.

Also be sure to thank a congressman for voting in this insanity. --74.222.xxx.xx

I also got the York class action suit notice. The Luxaire A/C I own required a costly fix last year when it was just 5 years old and I suppose it will be the same after I have it inspected this season. Such a ripoff! --66.213.xx.xx
