Dodged a small digital bullet this morning when I found an external drive I run the business on had died. Backups pay off big time. I unplugged the dead drive and clicked on the backup external drive to find I didn't lose anything. I grinned and then made a temporary copy on the internal drive. Put a note on my Any Do list on my phone to pick up another external drive.

My strategy is simple. Laptop die so I don't keep business data there - keep it on an external drive so it's plug and play. Use a second external drive because drives sometimes die. Set up the second drive to be your back up. Makes surprises like this morning a small inconvenience. A little speed bump. I don't have a monthly bill for someone to store my stuff in the cloud and although I'm waiting for the system to make a temporary copy of the data to the internal drive (extra safety net until I go pick up another external drive) I can still do some research on perspective properties. Life is good!

Glad to hear you have a good plan and it saved your bacon. Good data planning involves backups, more than one usually. I use PC, thumb drive, and Cloud.

The Cloud is free up to a point. I use Google Drive (15 GB free per account/gmail address) for documents and Flickr for pictures and video (1 TB free). Added bonus I can access any of my data anywhere at any time. I don't store bank accounts or SSNs there...otherwise, everything else. Guess someone could hack it, but it's a risk we take similar to accidentally getting a virus on a local drive. --173.19.xx.xxx

Perhaps I should add the cloud into the mix. Another source couldn't hurt for things like pictures and floor plans and advertisements. --174.232.xxx.xx

I decline to have my data fall from the cloud, when we hear about the VA, many department stores, AOL, those stories are only the ones reported - here comes that rainy day feeling again (the memory of the song), I get the song stuck in my head several hours after I read about the cloud. --76.188.xxx.xx

Better idea:

Keep data on PC, have backup disk do auto backup. Buy three or four backup disks and rotate the backup disks monthly or weekly depending on how often your data changes. Keep this week's on your PC, put last week's and the previous week's in a safety deposit box, and put the oldest one in a safe place at home. Rotate them. You can survive PC failure, disk failure, robbery, and the destruction of your house. --99.125.xxx.xxx

Good discussion - we need to replace our dinosaur Vista desktop, and plan to move to a laptop. Really like the external memory idea, with a separate backup. I don't trust the cloud, either. --71.175.xxx.xx
