So, I found the Flex Seal brand tape at Menards. $14.99 for a 4" X 5 foot roll. Yikes! But, I bought a roll.

Spent some time getting some in those gutters. In my imagination, it would go in easily, I'd be able to cut proper miters on the corner that leaks, lay it in a nice straight strip. The reality was, standing on my tallest ladder, on those dang skinny treads, using the scissors from my toolbox that might-should need to be sharpened, the fact that it is TAPE, and does what tape does, namely, stick to the scissors, stick to the gutter before it is perfectly in position... agghghg! I'm not as patient or meticulous as I used to be....tape while on a ladder is not my friend.

My assessment - I'm going to use this to patch over any larger holes (larger than pin hole, but smaller than end of a pencil,) and I'm going to buy a quart of the Rustoleum brand rubber coating to coat the bottom interior of the gutters for the pinholes. The tape was thinner than I expected, maybe 1/16" inch (probably less, I didn't measure. So, I'm not too worried about creating a ridge that catches debris.

For the person thinking of patching larger holes, I'd say give it a shot. If it gets even four or five years more out of those old gutters, that frees up cash flow for other things. Since these gutters had a few holes when I bought the house, but it was my first house (no cash flow yet) I used insect screening to lay down in the trough, then sprayed Flex Seal over to patch on a couple of holes about the size of a dime. Switched to Rustoleum brand (less runny, better spray, imo,) but, anyway, those little patches have mostly worked for 4 years now. Three spots need touch up now where my screen patch didn't hold; the tape should be great for that. But, for corners, I might have better success with the brush on Rustoleum rubber coating. --70.92.xxx.xxx

Keep it wet so you can slide it into the right place, then gently heat the parent object while stabilizing this tape, keep the torch moving until the moisture is gone, you will know how it feels as it can not move - your done. --76.188.xxx.xx

Did someone say noodles! I'm hungry!

hmm...spray coating the inside of all gutters when dry could be a good way to lengthen the life of a gutter.

I think we need more products like this - adhesive, rubbery...to seal up houses.

I saw this stuff advertised on TV and wondered if it could be half as good as they claim. Sounds like your experiences say it is. Good to know in case of an emergency. Would it really work as a temporary fix for something under pressure such as a cracked water supply line? Does it have a good shelf life, if it were purchased in advance - to keep on hand in case of such an event? --68.105.xxx.xxx

Dj, I haven't tried it under pressure, but it did stick pretty well.

Brad, extending the life is exactly what I'm hoping to achieve. I have two houses with newer roofs, but older gutters weren't addressed when previous owners did the roof. And, I admit, I prefer the old heavy steel gutters over the flimsy aluminium ones. Aluminium gutters bend too easily if a ladder is leaned against them.

I just need to figure out how to shop vac and pressure wash the gutters first. Now I'm making this an all summer project! --70.92.xxx.xxx

Thanks for the review -- it looks so easy on the commercials, but I have not tried the flex-seal or flex-tape yet.

I considered cutting my boat in half and taping it back together, just for fun, but I decided not to.

Mike, yeah, I saw those commercials also.Who would be bothered doing that. They have that stuff at Lowes, white, about $90 a gallon.$21 a quart, kinda pricey, but if it worked, would be great. Haven't seen galvanized gutters in years, only aluminueem. There are different thicknesses. The heavier gauge will be around when we're not....... .....Charlie..... .... ... --174.199.xx.xx

Ain't that the truth, Charlie. And this old gal don't bounce!

Sadly, our city recently had a death of a rehabber who fell from his roof. From the address, it was probably a 2 and 1/2 story house.

Maybe best I just sweep the trough with my little whisk broom and shop vac the dust, then glop on the Rustoleum rubber coating, once I tape those three holes. Skip the (pressure + water + ladder) . Hiring somebody to put on new gutters would be cheaper than the ambulance ride and ER visit. --70.92.xxx.xxx
