I was just watching "The Price Is Right" game show on TV. The showcase had an around-the-world trip that would last about 3 weeks. I heard myself say out loud to the TV (I do that a lot : ) "who can take three weeks in a row off to travel like that?!" (as if nobody could) Then I HEARD myself. Ding! Lightbulb on!

People (like me right now) who rely on a paycheck can't. Some of you CAN. THAT is why I am here doing this.

Standard vacation at entry level white collar job is 2 weeks and my last employer was 3 weeks. It is really limited by individual manager policy on how you can take it in practice --166.170.x.xx

I'm one of the lucky ones. Took 1 month off last year for a trip to Europe. I am very blessed to have a job that has such great benefits AND a brother who is able to be my backup landlord/handyman when Im gone. Without him all my traveling would not be possible. --174.209.x.xxx

I'm "banking" my time now in my 40s so that--good Lord willing (and I mean that)--in my 50s and onward there won't be any more 2-4 weeks of vacation per year.

Here's how I imagine life after 50. Waking up at 9:30 AM.

"Hmmmm.... where do I want to go and what do I want to do today?

The Price is time paid in now. The benefit...priceless. The trick is still enjoying life now (responsibly) while building up the dividends down the road.

People think I'm a nut for paying off my house by age 43. Wait until they see what I've done by age 50! --173.19.xx.xxx

That's one of the benefits of working for yourself.

I have taken 2-3 weeks off in the past to sail up the coast and to visit Cuba via sail boat.

Once my large project is done if the right offer comes up this fall I'd take off for a bit. My buddy is thinking about getting a Fleming motor yacht which could be located in FL or on one of the great lakes and would need to be transited to the Bahamas if purchased...I'd skip out for a few weeks for that in a second.

Don't wait to retire to live life, don't wait. My best friend growing up died at 25 of cancer, changed my outlook totally.

I'm not waiting until I am 50 to live life, who knows I might never see 50. --69.117.xxx.xxx

After 1996 I fired several bosses until I met one who understood -comp time-, I would bank up spare machine electrical repair parts and go away with a company phone for 3-4 week excursions to the ocean so if I turned it on and charged it they could call me if there was a signal, funny how that phone would be making those funny sounds the morning I got back to the workplace and charged it up, I did call them back just like the message said. Most of the time my workplaces were like tenants, raise this switch handle to turn on the lights, replacement gas cylinders have valves you turn anti-clockwise to release the gas into the oven atmosphere using a regulator of the correct color code - if you use the wrong gas the flames will run out of the curtains and burn the paint off the wall along with any cardboard boxes nearby. --76.188.xxx.xx

Who wants to do it in 3 weeks? You'd need at least two months to begin to do it properly... :) --166.137.xxx.xxx

I could do 3 weeks, but I like to be home that last week for bills paying and rent collecting. Suppose it could be done more online and remotely and setup in advance. Carolyn travels alot to Paris and a few times was "stuck" there for extended periods of time, and she managed somehow! I suppose she would have a lot of tips! --184.206.xxx.xxx
