State Specific Question About: CALIFORNIA (CA)
Do I legally have to forward mail for previous tenants?
Or can I just stamp them return to sender? --75.80.xxx.xx |

I just write not at this address & let the USPO deal with it. --72.93.xxx.x |

I do the same as Steve. Sometimes the best of the best postal workers will just re-deliver it and I will have to take it to the PO multiple times before they stop trying to deliver it. --166.137.xxx.xx |

It helps to us a sharpie and draw a line through the bar code at bottom of envelope, that'll keep stuff from being re-delivered. --174.209.xx.xx |

I took the mail left behind to the post office. Without
return addresss and postage, they just threw it in the garbage (in front of me). --24.233.xxx.xx |

I place a manilla file card in the mailbox showing forward all, no occupant, things still get in there so I take to post office marked return or forward, no longer here. --76.188.xxx.xxx |

I had a custom self inking stamp made that says in bright red letters NOT AT THIS ADDRESS. I stamp them and leave them in the mailbox with the flag up.
Strangely satisfying to stamp those envelopes. --98.145.xx.xxx |

I have taken tenants mail back to post office and return to sender.... big waste of time... they never change to their new address and mail keeps coming..... now I just leave it in mail box and write on it...return to sender --75.128.xx.xxx |

Like RathdrumGal, I also have a red NOT AT THIS ADDRESS stamp.
RB - The USPS put the former tenant's mail on the door step after they moved out and we took the mailbox down to replace it. --73.156.xxx.xx |

Yesterday I got a call from a tenant that I booted last year. She wondered if my current tenant had gotten any mail for her? I said I didn't think so, but I'd check. She was expecting a check, and thought 'they mailed it to the old address.' Oh, a check! I laughed, and said, ooh, I could turn it over to you at your bank, so you could remember your landlord, who was good to you. (And, she owed a bit.)
So, yep, new tenant did have some mail, old tenant and I met at her bank. Got a few green pictures of dead presidents in my pocket. Win! --70.92.xxx.xxx |
