State Specific Question About: MASSACHUSETTS (MA)

Greetings to all...

I have a potential tenant who has an issue disclosing his SSN# on the application. He says he works for the federal govt in NY.

Although still waiting for the potential tenant to return with a possible 'out of state ID' and proof of employment with the fed govt, should I proceed without a SSN? --72.79.xxx.xxx

What were his reasons? If it's required for your background check then I'd stand by the requirement. However, if you cut him some slack on this, you are starting your relationship off as a pushover. Expect more resistance later on. --99.125.xxx.xxx

So what if he works for the federal government. So did I...for 30 years. There are times I still had to provide my social security number to have credit checks run on me.

Being a "fed" played no role in this.

I played that game with the bank. They haven’t had my SSN since around 1980. I told them I was in the witness protection program and couldn’t give out my SSN. What fun… for one of us anyway.

So all the miliitary people who work for the U.S. gov. Do they give out SSN's --67.45.xxx.xx

PaulM,

We're starting to get this occasionally. Lots of publicity to keep your SSN private. A responsible person SHOULD be slow to give it out. It is wise on his part to not give it out casually to an unknown LL.

OR he does not want you to run his credit report or criminal check.

In case he is legit, being responsible, and not a wacko or criminal, we talk it out and start their app with the understanding that before we cannot finalize his approval until we will have the SSN.

I do not know why being a govt employee makes a difference to SSN privacy.

Suggest he sign up for LifeLock or such.

Ask him for a copy of all his "SF-86 form" (except for the front page that has his SSN) instead. When he ask what that is - you will know he is blowing smoke.

FYI - that is the security clearance information form, that will list all the addresses you have lived at and the next of kin. --24.239.xx.xxx

I'm willing to bet the house (or possibly a couple houses) that the Credit Information associated with the SSN the prospect does not want to provide STINKS. It has nothing to do with being a Federal Employee.

Move on to the next prospect. --72.95.xxx.xx
