Who are you? Besides the obvious real estate and posting of the Mr. landlord forum, what would you say is your second obsession? I would say mine is a split between hunting & nature and World War II history. It would be tough for me to decide between the two. I love being out in nature as much as possible. Far away from the sounds of the every day noise of modern society. Just the wind and the birds and animals. It's a great place to think.
I also have a fascination with anything World War II, movies books stuff like that. My one dream is to fix up an old World War II era Willys Jeep and just keep it in my garage. Kind of like Brad 20,000's Porsche.

My second obsession is nutrition and health. Since my family has a lot of health issues, we have tried a lot of different diets, supplements, homeopathic and traditional medicines.
Getting into homesteading and home agriculture, alternative energy sources. Budding interest.

My other enthusiasm besides real estate is that I sing in a Cathedral choir. Its Anglican (Episcopalian) so as the saying goes we are God's frozen people. The music brings you closer to God and the values help guide decisions as a Landlord and in all else. One thing I have noticed on this board is that many people talk about the influence of faith in the way they approach their everyday dealings with others. Treating people with dignity and respect even when they might try your patience is one outcome of this that is very useful for Landlording.
This does sometimes lead to a mixing of the sacred and the profane. One night I was juggling negotiations for my latest purchase while in choir practice. The iPhone was buzzing and I made a few quick exits to make decisions with my realtor and then it was back to singing with the Angels. I explained my absences as being a family issue, which I suppose it was in a general sense. I keep landlording private, only a handful of people know we own rental property, for various reasons. We saved pretty hard to buy our units but many of the people we know have income and expenses in a pretty fine balance. They can't imagine owning other people's homes. I don't live ostentatiously, in fact I drive a cheaper car than most of my tenants. It is all tied together.

What an awesome place. I found it by accident. I was driving down to some properties I used to own in southern Texas, and was looking for a cheap place to stay. Found Big Bend, and fell in love. It has desert. It has mountains. It has trails. It has the Rio Grande for kayaking and canoeing. It is so far away from any civilization, that it is rarely busy, except for holidays and over Spring Break. I have been back 4 times in the past 3 years. One of mine is helping run a public Forum held each Sunday morning at my church. For each week we invite a different speaker from the community to come at 10 am Sunday, speak for about 30-35 minutes, and then answer questions until 11. We then move to a smaller room for persons who want to talk with the speaker some more. The hour is recorded and then is replayed on a local community radio show a week and a half later (with written consent from the presenter). Our Forum program began in 1943, and I have been part of the small group that runs it for about 30 years. The topic often is some social justice topic. Each January whoever is mayor of our city is invited to give a state of the city type address. There is a more traditional service led by the minister at 11:15. --136.63.xx.xx |

I'm a beach and palm trees girl. I cure that itch 3x/year to the Caribbean.
Also I do geneology for my family--all the way back to 'the old country.' And it 'aint easy' because families had sometimes 10-12 children, many childhood deaths went unrecorded-just disappeared from the records, and most of all because the females married and disappeared into their new husband's name. If you don't know the new name they are lost forever. So it is a great mystery investigating these missing people. Also, many names were changed when coming to America. Not only records, but phone calls to distant relatives still alive who may know some family history and be able to give you a clue.
When you find someone and trace their family, it's very satisfying to be able to call a desendant and say HEllo I'm your 4th cousin because our great grandmothers were sisters!
Three of my 4 sets of grandparents were German immigrants, and one Irish. Harder to get German reords because of the language dif. But the hunt is still fun. --108.87.xx.xxx |
