I need to get the gas turned on now that my tenant from Hell has vacated. I'm putting the house on the market and the gas needs to be on for the inspection. What company should I use as a provider that will be cheap to turn on in the first place. I don't care too much about the rate since I won't be using it for that long (fingers crossed) but I want to be able to get it turned on cheaply and have a low monthly fee. Any suggestions?

State Specific Question About: GEORGIA (GA)

In my neck of the woods the two biggest providers are SCANA Energy and Georgia Natural Gas. Both compete with each other in regards to monthly costs to new customers. You can check out rates online for these two.

Again, in my county it doesn't matter which one you choose; it's Georgia Natural Gas that actually checks to make sure it's safe to turn on the meter, light the pilots if the range and hot water is gas), add a drip connection if needed, etc.. It's $60 for a turn on which is added to the first bill.

You get to choose gas companies? Here we have one and that's it unless you own a high rise or something similar. --73.34.xxx.xx

If you want cheap, contact a furnace person and get a loaner bottle for testing, if they can give a certificate of safe operation you may just use that and never pay the gas man. --76.188.xxx.xxx

I suspect it doesn't really matter who you choose. In my experience between tenants it is something like this:

Actual costs for gas: $3.00

Charges for customer service, Atlanta Gas Light standard charges, other B.S. charges: $35

Also, there is the lovely $40-$50 "connect charge" when you switch the service.

Well, I found out the answer.

Bad news: In the city of Buford, you can ONLY get gas from the City of Buford, and you can ONLY do that by driving to the Buford City Hall and proving you own or rent the property, and putting down a $235 deposit.

Good news: There is no connection fee. Final bill refunds your deposit minus the cost of gas.
