I may be moving to a consulting position where I would pay taxes individually and provide my own health insurance.

My whole life I have had insurance through a company and never had to shot for it so if I go this route then I would need at least health and dental insurance, or is dental better paid out of pocket?

With the laws that changed do you have to go to the healthcare exchange site to get a quote on insurance or do you just contact a company to get a quote?

Is there anything I need to worry about. The only possible issue I can see coming up is my wife had cancer about 8 years ago and is fully recovered and cancer free.

It would be for my wife and me, no kids. Any idea what to expect as far as premiums and deductibles? We currently have a $3,000 family deductible and pay about $600 a month in premiums. --74.130.xxx.xxx

I have an old policy that was "grandfathered" - it doesn't conform to ACA mandates.

I believe that you may still be better off to buy a non-conforming policy and pay your fine to the IRS.

I would enroll in a mutual aid provider such as Medi share. --72.172.xxx.xx

Just signed up on the exchange for insurance covering my wife and I. $400/month without the tax credit for a $6,000 deductible. I would start by checking the rates at healthcare.gov, then look elsewhere it they are too high for you. --73.146.xxx.xxx

Thanks for the info. So with the ACA you are fined if you don't go through the .gov site? If I remember correctly the fines will increase year over year until it cost so much you have no choice but to use the ACA site.

Does anyone know what the fines are this year and next? --74.130.xxx.xxx

The fines are set to increase each year. As I understand it, the issue isn't whether you go through government site- but the your policy is ACA compliant (cover gender re assignment, maternity, abortions).

I have several friends using Medi Share and are very satisfied - it is not insurance- but mutual aid. As you might imagine, contributions (premiums) are far lower than ACA compliant insurance. --72.172.xxx.xx

Hubby had prostate cancer 6 years ago. We are self employed and pay $1500/mo for health and dental with $7500 deductible each.

I need to look into getting something cheaper!!! --71.123.xxx.xxx

i do well with my O-care from the HealthCare . gov site.

It's actually the same policy i was paying much more for and i now have a lower deductible. IT does not cover dental, so i have a different plan - not insurance - for dental. --184.206.xxx.xx

Neither my wife or I work, both in our 40s. We each have seperate policies. Mine through the exchange, 425 per month, 4 k deductible. Hers is off exchange and 450 per month, 3000 deductible. She has many pre existing conditions, it doesn't matter anymore. That's the only good thing about the affordable care act. --166.137.xxx.xx

The website provides a quick cost estimate, shop there first. Then go to your insurance agent knowing what you could pay. Rates vary with your age and deductibles but again you can see how that changes on the website. I've paid my own medical for the past 20 years but I dropped dental a long time ago as it never seemed to pay to have it. --108.32.xx.xxx

Sisco, Ive been looking at Medishare and on their web site they claim to satisfy the gov requirement so that a tax penalty is avoided. (eventhough they admit it is not insurance) Do you know if that is correct, that it allows you to avoid tax penalty? --174.196.xxx.xx

Had a Catastrophic Policy in 2012 that we liked a lot. $450 per month for both of us, $10k deductible but 100% covered after that.

Fast Forward to 2016 under the ACA: premiums for the same plan - but with the new requirements such as child coverage, pregnancy coverage (we are in our late 50/60's) etc.

Premiums are $1700 per month and deductible is $13,000 per year. So cash money $30k+ per year out of pocket before coverage kicks in (although we do get the benefits of contract rates, which is what we had before.)

We are told to expect a 20% increase, perhaps, in 2017.

We have only one provider in NC, BCBS, which is what we had before... --74.110.xxx.xx

I looked into rates last year in my area in WI.

In your 20's, 30's, and 40's, rates were reasonable.

But, in your 50's, rates took a BIG jump.

And, in your 60's rates took another BIG jump.

I believe for a couple aged 60, that the ACA rates of premium, deductible, and copay added up to 28K per year.

Also, in order to get some government subsidy, our income needed to be either under 62K or 64K. I think it was all or nothing. 1 penny under the limit would give us 10K subsidy. 1 penny over would give us nothing. So, pays to plan ahead and perhaps take stock money or whatever out in advance for some people. --24.181.xxx.xx

As Beth said, the older you are, the higher the premiums. We are 59 and 61, with a college student dependent. We're paying the full premium of about $1800 per month - when my hubby retired from the school system, he could stay on their excellent plan, but had to pay the entire premium himself.

We shopped through two brokers and the ACA site - and found that this was the cheapest and the best.

Basically, ACA is set up in a way that is forcing many older Americans to skip retiring until they reach Medicare age, due to the costs. If my folks hadn't left us some money, my hubby would have had to work his high-stress job that exacerbated his auto-immune condition for another 5 years (as the rental manager and household CEO, I haven't been employed for 27 years, and it's doubtful that I could pick up anything meaningful with benefits at my age).

My dear cheapskate mother would be appalled as to where the money she scrimped to save is going. --71.175.xxx.xxx

remember when you are stating your income it's after expenses, if it's from rentals... which reduced my to very little income and my rate is half of what it was before O-care was an option. and I'm over 50 and have one college age son on the plan... very good terms. Hang onto your wallet; we had bcbs at $799 per month with $1500.00 deductible. After O care said we must change to include maternity at 63 our rate went to $1800.00! Got it down to $1150.00 with 6K deductible each. With Healthcare .gov they wanted to count gross income not net from rentals to base income rate. --47.201.xxx.xxx

That's very interesting, I punched in some numbers for just an estimate and if what I am seeing is accurate it is only a little more than what I am paying now. For two in 30's $660 a month, $3,000 deductible for family, and $7,000 total out of pocket.

I will definitely try and go directly to a insurance company first though. --74.130.xxx.xxx
