State Specific Question About: PENNSYLVANIA (PA)
I was contacted by a person from a county agency that runs a subsidized rent program. She has a need to find housing for people in their program. They are a rehabilitative program that work with people who have a mental illness and/or drug history. They will cover the rent until the individual can do it on their own. They are committed to these people for 2 years unless the recipient breaks their contract and they are removed from the program. Their goal is to keep them out of jail and get them the help that they need to become contributing members of society.
Has anyone had any dealings with this type of situation?
Any suggestions or recommendations? Thank you --173.86.xx.xxx |

Anything that the government is evolved in would scare me. Once they have solved their problem you are on your own! --108.196.xxx.xxx |

I also would run. if/when the tenant breaks their contract with the agency and the agency doesn't pay your rent, you need to evict. --72.70.xxx.xxx |

Betting one thing that would get them thrown out of the contract would be trashing your house. Then you'd be left with a trashed house and a non-paying tenant. --99.125.xxx.xxx |

If it were such a great program, people would be calling them, not the other way around. --99.125.xxx.xxx |

I'm a big supporter of the sec. 8 program and I wouldn't touch that one. If it were true mental illness, I would be the 1st one in line to house them. Nowadays, simply getting nervous when someone says, "get a job" is considered debilitating anxiety and worthy of a SSI check. --71.166.x.xx |

Everything can go downhill if they don't take there medication or they go back on alcohol. No one knows until they move in which way it is going to go. It is a double edge sword. --74.220.xxx.xxx |

Would each house have a live in manager?? Or is this a family with a family member trying to get clean? --24.233.xxx.xx |

I had a perfect tenant who had a good paying, responsible job. I vetted this guy better than the CIA would. I was unaware that he needed heavy duty "head meds" to keep it together. One day he went off his meds and stopped paying rent. I had to evict and got a trashed rental back. I found out about the "head meds" when I found the pill bottles during the clean out. This poor soul was taking so many pills I have no idea how he kept them straight. This sounds cold, but, anyone who needs drugs ( legal or not ) just to function normally is too big a risk. I assume the folks in this program are walking pharmacies as well. --157.204.x.x |

I agree with you del. Unfortunately our rights allowing us to protect ourselves are slowly being eroded.
I take pets over ESA animals as a means of protection. Anyone who claims they can't function without an animal living with them who doesn't feel I should be allowed to help mitigate my risk is not worth dealing with. And I have the utmost empathy for those unable to function normally. Doesn't mean I want to assume the risks they come with though.

I have done it a few times, our county also begs for these places as about 5 years ago a building collapsed that was the county home since I was a young adult (the rooftop was a radio paradise), but these guys were arrested often for selling medical maryjane (yes OH has had it for years) along with other stuff and damaging nearby properties throwing lawn chairs thru windows while people were at home, I think the county ran out of clients for this house and they did fix everything up before turning in the keys, the rent was triple what HUD had listed for fair market value on the sec8 program. If you are a beginner this is not easy navigating thru the paperwork - you will prolly spend 10-14 days a month at county buildings petitioning for the repairs and threading thru police reports showing how it is justified. --76.188.xxx.xxx |

A friend is newly refurbishing two apartments above his shop in a trendy local town. The local gubmint people got wind of it (completely legal, all permits pulled), and approached him about a county subsidized rental.
They want to put a Down's Syndrome adult and a full-time caregiver in a 2-bedroom apartment. I'm stunned. This town has some of the priciest apartments in the county, and these will be no exception. And you can bet that my county and state taxes are paying for this young person to live there, and for his/her FULL TIME caregiver.
The county claims that apartments like this are hard to come by. Excuse me, but 5 miles away they are about 2/3 cheaper! And if it comes to that, group homes with caregivers come even cheaper!
End of rant. --71.175.xxx.xx |
