State Specific Question About: CALIFORNIA (CA)

What is the most effective way to seal MDF bases on kitchen cabinets to prevent water damage? --68.125.xx.xxx

Do you mean the base cabinets? The toe plate board. ?? The edges of cabinet doors? ? I thought MDF was covered with the Formica? --66.87.xx.xxx

I stay away from MDF.

But the few times just add PVC lattice strip to the bottoms.

Will raise it 1/4" but not a big deal. And the quarter round molding will cover it. --73.40.xx.xx

Thanks for the suggestions. The Lowes kitchen classic D wheat finished base cabinets' mdf exterior sides are covered with formica. Worried about mdf bottom edges sitting on concrete slab. Does the PVC lattice strip come with press on adhesive or does it have to be glued on? Was planning to coat MDF bottom edges and couple inches up interior MDF with couple coats of thin shellac to reduce moisture absorption. --68.125.xx.xxx

We just used a hot glue gun. Does not take much. Main thing is MDF does not contact the floor.

You could use anything plastic. Even plastic furniture feet cut to size --73.40.xx.xx

On the bottom of cabinets install Schluter ditra membrane then add in ceramic tiles. A small quantity of ceramic tiles is not expensive. --74.220.xxx.xx

Dave, even four sheetrock screws ,one in each corner, and let them project down a quarter inch, should do the trick,no need to make things more complicated than they are.Charlie...... ..... .... ... .. --70.215.x.xx
