Today I am buying a 2003 Ford F-150 pick-up truck that has an Extended Cab and 6.5 ft. bed. This 13 year old truck, which has a 4.6 / Triton V-8, appears to be in mint condition and has only 83K miles on it. I am buying the truck from the original owner who only drove it to church on Sundays,...LOL.

Now, before I tell you what I am paying, I want you to tell me what you would pay for this truck. The owner's asking price was $7,800.00. Kelly Blue Book says $6,800.00 is the right price.

What would you pay? --68.62.xxx.xxx

If you love it, pay whatever it takes to bring it home! Sounds like a nice find. ANY COLOR works for me! --173.108.xxx.xxx

Kelly Blue Book has been around since 1926. Are they still considered the Holy Grail source for used car values?

In the last 6 months, I have test driven numerous used pick-ups (think fixer-uppers) and most of them were junkers and would need additional major repairs. Like buying fixer-upper houses, occasionally you will find a 'diamond in the rough' and I think I found it with this 03' pick-up with low miles on it. Looks can be deceiving though. --68.62.xxx.xxx

Now back to my question,...what is the most you would pay for this vehicle? $4,500 is just your 1st offer,...how high would you go?

In the last 6 months, I have made numerous low-ball offers on used pick-ups (junkers) and all were rejected without even a counter-offer. From this experience, I have realized that it is much easier for me to negotiate the selling price of a house than it is for a similar used auto. --68.62.xxx.xxx

Is the vehicle certified. Here a vehicle must be certified to transfer ownership along with vehicle must pass a emission test. It is always prudent to have a mechanic do a inspection. Brakes, suspension along with other repairs can easily add up into the thousands. Check with the dealer. Here Ford will not supply a lot of parts on vehicles older then ten years. So one may have to go the wreckers for parts or after market parts. --74.220.xxx.xxx

It would depend on how badly I needed a truck. If I needed one I would be willing to pay KBB private party value for the truck but would start $1000-1500 below that. If I didn't really have to have one and would only buy if I could steal it somewhere in that $4500-5000 price range would be where I'd like to be. I try to keep my capital outlay on vehicle ownership at 10 cents a mile or less. That's what I pay for the vehicle plus major repairs less what I sell it for. I don't include maintenance such as oil changes, tires, and tune-ups, and minor repairs such as starters, alternators, etc. --108.253.xxx.x

Patty, you asked what else can they take besides cash? Well, the seller could be asked to meet at the bank so the bank can issue a cashiers check and collect the title. I have sold hundreds of cars and you would be suprised at the number of people who try to use a personal check. One could also use a cashiers check, money order, bank wire, PayPal, trade for goods such as guns, etc. there are many options besides cash. That's why I said cash talks. I only get cash when I sell a car, that way it can go straight in the coffee can buried in the back yard. --166.137.xxx.xx

Razorback,

For the last 6 months, I have been towing a 5x8 utility trailer behind my 2007 Expedition. What a major HASSLE it is to pull a small trailer to/from Lowes to haul 4x8 plywood and drywall. Have you ever tried to back-up a small utility trailer?

Yes, I really need a pick-up truck and I really wanted one with an 8 ft. bed but could only find used ones that had way too many miles on them. 8 ft. beds are almost extinct now, so I lowered my min. requirements and settled for a 6.5 bed in mint condition. (I can always drop the tailgate for 8 ft. lumber).

I have agreed to pay $7K for this truck. The seller is driving the truck to my house this afternoon. It seems like I pay more for vehicles than I do for houses. --68.62.xxx.xxx

With only 83K miles if it has been taken care of then you should have no problems getting your money's worth based on my simple formula. Vehicles built in the last 15 years should all go 200K+ if properly maintained. I have become a big believer in synthetic oil even for my old truck. I'm basing that on conversations I've had with several mechanics and a couple of machine shops. You might check into that for your new purchase. My truck is also a 6.5' bed. I have hauled 16' lumber in it multiple times using a receiver hitch bed extender. You can get them at harbor freight for 70 bucks. --108.253.xxx.x

Razorback,

Does your 200K mile number include the automatic transmission too? I doubt it,...rebuilding a transmission starts at about $1,800.00. A new crate trany is about $3,500.

Most of the used vehicles I test drove had at least $150K miles on them and they all needed some type of major repair done to them which I think is the reason they were for sale. I don't mind buying fixer-upper houses that need major repairs but with depreciating autos,...no way. --68.62.xxx.xxx

Roy - my truck has 258K with original transmission. We have a Honda van with 228K with original transmission. So yes original transmissions can last over 200K miles. If it doesn't and you spend $1800 having it rebuilt then you just have to drive the truck another 18,000 miles. :) --108.253.xxx.x

Once a truck gets to that age it is recommended to change the anti freeze, transmission fluid, filters, differential along with all the heater hoses, Upper rad hose and fan belt. Found that using synthetic oil is a better option. Avoid buying cheaper oil filters as there is less material. Rust also has to be in check. Ford uses plastic stops in the bottom of door which prevents water from draining out. It is common for rust to build up at the bottom of doors. A removal of the rust along with rust paint minimizes rust build up. Also be careful about the oil viscosity in the engine. Newer engine use 5-20 and 5-30 viscosity. Some people have ruined a engine by using 10-30 as the oil has to pump up faster. --74.220.xxx.xx

Roy sounds like a great deal.

The company my son works for has a fleet of F-150's. When they reach their fully depreciated value, they sell them to the employees for $1.00 rather than hassle with selling them on the open market. They are all worth thousands but it's too much time & effort, and would only complicate their taxes!

They are a bit cosmetically damaged (his seats were ripped) but fully maintained. He got one with (150? 180? k miles) for ONE DOLLAR! All it needed was tires. And some seat covers bought on Amazon.

Exteriors look great.

That was at least three years ago and it is still going strong. --173.22.xx.xx

I was looking for a 'work truck' too since 8ft. beds were standard equipment on them. My small town has 2 major auto dealers, Ford and Chevrolet. I went to both in search of a new or used 'work truck' and neither dealer had anything close to what I was looking for. One dealer was honest with me and said there was not much profit in selling plain jane work trucks which have no bells and whistles on them!

Plus, those type trucks are normally ordered from the factory in fleet sales. --68.62.xxx.xxx

KBB has 3 different prices; Trade-In/wholesale, Private Party, and Retail. Which price are you looking at? Personally, I would offer a price somewhere between trade-in and private party values.

OTOH, I sold my 1998 F150 in less than 24 hours. I had 3 buyers calling me within 12 hours of listing it. This was back in 2008. You may need to forget KBB and look at what they are actually selling for in your area. If this is the best truck in a very limited supply, someone will pay his price.

BTW, my current truck is a 2007 F150 SuperCrew with the 4.6. I love it and plan on driving it until the wheels fall off. It has 104K miles on it and feels like a new truck.

Vee, the spark plug problem affected the 5.4L. I never had any issues with my 1998 4.6 or my 2007 4.6.

Bottom Line: The longer stroke of the 5.4 required shallower cylinder heads. This left the spark plug holes with fewer threads. The plugs would occasionally launch. This required a Helicoil type fix to repair the hole. Dealers were charging $400 to $500 per hole for the repair.

My good friend owns an automotive machine shop and has owned several Ford trucks. He found a better repair kit than Ford and was charging about half of what the dealer charged.

The OEM plugs are rated to go 100K miles. When removing them, it is possible to break them. They are often screwed in very tight. The best way to do this is to shoot penetrating oil down each hole and let sit overnight. Use plenty of oil, it is cheap.
