Dont know the question - the newer meters I have seen you can read by shining a flashlight over the lens which has a photocell that reacts and then the numbers are visible in a LCD display. If you are trying to bill tenants for water usage you would have a meter for each unit after the city/county provided meter and each unit would then have a meter (each unit would have the water lines divided out including their own water heater) you would record the numbers and subtract previous getting an actual unit usage amount - when you have the 3 usage you divide the whole usage cost by way of the unit usage to get the cost for each tenant. This is just like the dairy store or the filling station for the car, you pay for what you pour. --76.188.xxx.xxx |

In a multifamily family property the City changed two tenants power meters to smart meters. One of the meters is the one the City uses to have all of the other smart meters on the block communicate with, then my meter transmits the data to the City via Cell towers.
That unit I left vacant for two months with all of the power turned off except for a LED exterior light fixture. The power it consumed was only $1.20 per month but the power company billed me about $30 in power usage. Why, because the constant retrieval and storage memory consumes a lot of power. I was cheated and also was told I couldn't opt out. So I disconnected the meter so that the City couldn't collect the data and would have no choice but to reveal the truth. --173.55.xxx.xx |

Will the city allow a second meter to be installed? Is there a cost to you for that second meter? Once you know that, you can determine if the cost is worth the savings and whether the city's meter or your own submeter is a better option for you. --73.146.xxx.xxx |

When my electric utility company promoted smart meters (and convince regulators that we should pay for their cost), they said these contraptions would be more efficient, and save customers more money. What they didn't tell us was of their ability to REMOTELY SHUT OFF service with ease! (I've had a few complaints and surprises along the way).
With that being said, I wonder if master meters have that same ability to shut off water service too! --66.87.xx.xxx |

Correction: I meant smart meters, not "master" meters. --66.87.xx.xxx |
